Singapore 1970/71

During my dad’s posting to Singapore (he was stationed at Jurong), we attended a family event featuring a limited Flypast and some ground aircraft. I know there were two Meteor TT20s(?), A shackleton, Whirlwinds (SAR and grey/green types). I don’t remember anything in the way of fast jets (I was only five at the time). Does anyone know which base it could have been on (RAF Changi, Seletar or Tengah). and what units these aircraft could have come from?

Thing is I don’t remember there being a runway, but I do have a photograph of a type A or C hangar in the background. I also remember the RAF Fire Service being present as well as the usual tractor and bomb trolley converted into a train.

Phillip,

Your airfield could well have been Sembewang. It was a grass airfield and at the time you were there was the home of a RM Commando unit and 847 NAS with Wessex HU5.
I am sure it also had hangars of a very similar type to the mid thirties C type, as did Tengah and Seletar, don’t think Changi did though.
Units for the types you mention were most probably; 1574 Flight for the Meteors, 205 Sqn for the Shackleton, 103 and 110 Squadrons for the Whirlwinds.
