The Violette Szabo GC Museum!

Greetings fellow FlyPast Forum members, been reading much lately on the SOE and the life of one of its bravest agents, Violette Szabo and wondered if any of you had been to this museum near Wormelow? Can you give me a review of what is there and has anyone seen the video they sell at the museum, ” Violette Szabo Remembered” ? Have tried to find this particular video on the internet and guess they only sell it at the museum. Thanks for any help here !

The Special Operations Executive 1940-1946!

Remember Before God
those men and women of
the European Resistance
Movement who were secretly
trained in Beaulieu to fight
their lonely battle against Hilter’s
Germany and who before entering
Nazi – occupied territory here
found some measure of peace for
which they fought !

Thanks JDK on SOE tape !

The S.O.E.:

Yes I found a copy off www.amazon.co.uk and got it remastered to N.T.S.C. and its a fantastic look at the O.S.E. Just picked up a great book on the history of the organization by M.R.D. Foot . Who was a member of the
SOE during the war and its called ” SOE : The Special Operations Executive
1940-46″ ISBN # 0-89093-673-0 I see the book was made into a series by the BBC in the 1970’s, do you guys remember seeing this on British television ? Did a search and looked at several UK based video/dvd stores but had no luck ! But really enjoyed “Now it can be Told” outstanding record on the SOE and it brave agents !

Thanks !

Not allowed a copy? Her daughter? Disgusting!
I sincerely hope that someone reading this thread is in a position to give her a copy, if she still doesn’t have one – I certainly would if I could!

This was back in the 1950’s, I’m pretty sure she has a copy now.

Going back a few years, a Lysander took part in the local Air show, as a treat Tania was given a buzz around the island. I’m not sure if her mother ever flew in Lizzies. If I recall she was dropped into France from a US Liberator, however I maybe wrong.

If you’s like to learn about the SOE, get “Now it Can Be Told” the wartime film made by the SOE. Available as VHS tape from DD – got mine at the IWM shop, don’t think there’s a NSTC version.

As an aside.

I find the b/w films WII films of the 1950’s fascinating and I guess the reason is that the military/civil hardware used on set was still current or recent surplus.

In ‘Carve Her Name with Pride’, I remember seeing an old French car in one scene – it was a Renault 8.3 very similar to the Opel Kaydet. Special memories for me, for one of these had been my first car as a trainee engineer in 1960. It was a dilapidated 1939 model, cost £5 and took quite a lot of fixing as there were zero spares available. I learnt quite a lot from it, making all the worn out parts and it set me off on a life time path of automotive engineering design and development. They must have imported just a few pre WWII as I never ever saw another on the road. It was produced post war in small numbers I gather and in my travels I saw one in a scrap yard in Marrakesh and a staff car version in a military museum in Hanoi both countries with strong French influence.

Ian please give my regards to Tarnia !

Ian:

Please give my kind regards to Ms Szabo’s daughter and how much I admire her bravery and service to her country in the SOE. Her deeds will live forever and we should do all we can to remember and honor those who risked all in the cause of liberty and freedom. I would hope by now she has a video or dvd copy of “CARVE HER NAME WITH PRIDE”. In today’s world we over use the term hero and for the short life of Violette Sazbo it hardly describes her service to the Ailles & mankind ! Hope all is well Ian …got to get over soon and pay you a visit..take care !

Thanks!

A documentary about Violette Szabo !

Thanks men, yes I am talking about the documentary made by former BBC Porducer/Director Marcus Davidson. Its called ” Violette Szabo Remebered”
and is sold at the museum. I hope to make contact with the museum and order a copy. Such a brave woman and she was taken at such a young age. I was hoping someone here on the Flypast forum had a copy of the documentary and could tell me about it. Got to get “CARVE HER NAME WITH PRIDE” on DVD. With events like those on 9/11 here an in London the last two weeks we could use more people like Violette Szabo. Just placed an order for
the book by author Susan ottaway “Violette Szabo: The Life I Had” !

Thanks !

I am friendly with Tarnia, Violettes daughter. She was present during the making of the film, but when she asked if she could have a copy the producers told her that in no uncertain circumstances would she be allowed a copy.

As with most dramatisations the film wanders away from the real events, the most glaring one is that Violette was dark-haired, in the film she’s a blonde.

Tarnia very kindly read High Flight at the Memorial Service and unveiling of a plaque to Sqn Ldr Robert Woodward and W/O Donald McPhail (RCAF) of 263 Sqn.

Tarnia’s flat is adorned with many mementos of her parents.

BN
thanks for the heads up on this.
‘Carve Her Name With Pride’ really is a good film.
The actor Jack Warner played her father brilliantly I always thought.
I’ll try and get down there one of these days.

I happend to find a very old copy I made years ago off late night tv of “CARVE HER NAME WITH PRIDE”, great film about a very brave woman and one of those classic British World War II films one can watch over and over !!!!! Perhaps with the state the world is in now with the new face of terrorism, the good guys might need to bring back the OSE, Mr Churchill had the right idea !!!!!
