Question: what is a metalled runway? I keep seeing this term in books and magazines.
Also, I noticed in many of the glorious pictures from Flying Legends that many aircraft were using the grass runway at Duxford. Why?
Also, what in your opinion is the best grass airfield in the UK?

Hardwick without a shadow of doubt, 1/2 a mile of smooth flat grass, fantastic aircraft and friendly people. Without it I would be going everywhere by road.

Middle Wallop is still grass overall, so still retains some of its Battle of Britain atmosphere.
Now operated by the Army Air Corps with the Museum of Army Flying on site.
Had some stunning airshows in the eighties.

Old Sarum and Knettishall.

I’d have to agree that Old Warden and Compton Abbas have to be among the top grass airfields in the UK. Old Sarum and Sandown aren’t bad either.

Compton Abbas is a great grass field in a beautiful area near Salisbury with a good landing fee
…….and they do a good meal
Just wish it was a bit more obvious when you’re trying to find it !
