Heard somewhere that at Rendcombe in Gloucestershire there is an airfield with original and replica WW1 buildings and grass air strip, is this true, and anything interesting there to have a look at? Would make an amazing museum/place to have an airshow!

If James has arranged to renew his DA, then the 2 people who may be available to do it will tell him what he needs to know….
It’s private chaps, with many sensitive areas around. Why do you think it’s not marked on the charts???? Those who NEED to know, already know.

Erm, hello, anybody in???? Not on maps, not in pooleys, you know why? ITS PRIVATE!!!!! you go there when invited to do so, then you are given the information required.

If those of you with Google Earth go to 51 46 58.57N 01 57 09.58W you will see RENDCOMB. If you flip the image so that N is at the bottom you can read “RFC RENDCOMB”, in white, on the red-roofed building. I regret my PI skills are not sufficiently good to identify the airframe – but your’s may be.

The Utterly Butterly team seems to have changed to the “Guinot AeroSuperBatics Team” more info at the site below. They will do a private airshow for you at their field if you have the cash!

Hello and welcome to the Forum. Thanks for ‘searching ‘ before posting your question! This is ALL I can find about the airfield, must be a great secret. Maybe have to buy Pooley’s!:)
RENDCOMB
To the east of a minor road that runs north from Cirencester to Withington. Do not welcome visitors

I was only kidding Ozplane 🙂
I am working the Saturday, but not for CW as the museum are a little short on staff. Sunday we are racing our car at Brands so it will be the first Legends in many years that I am not doing both days. Look forward to seeing you there anyway.

LS, the laws of libel being what they are I didn’t want to mention the “rocker’s” name but I wasn’t referring to Martyn even though he may have put on a bit of weight. Are you doing Legends?

It’s so secret it’s not on the latest 1/2 million map so watch out if you’re going to Kemble by air this weekend. (It’s just South of the disused strip at Chedworth.) I believe one of the “geriatric rockers” has a Jet Ranger and a Cub based thereabouts.
Jet Ranger ,no. Super Cub and lots of very nice ( and expensive!! ) cars, yes.

I don’t think Martyn would be happy about you calling him a geriatric rocker 🙂

James,
My Arab cousin Group Captain Yasser Verifat, RJAF retd enjoyed it hugely. However his immediate deportation by the immigration authorities at the earnest demand of the CAA, which followed his gentle fluttering in a Tiger, did prevent him from fulfilling several lucrative airshow bookings. I fear the ongoing political situation does mean that his appearances in western countries since 2001 have not been possible.
My other cousins, Colonel Ivor Bolokov, SovAF retd and Captain Wyatt Werp, USN retd along with my ex-Luftwaffe uncle Major Ritter von Schiessenhausen and my great uncle Major Prique Bannock RFC retd, continue to be available for airshow appearances for the discriminating organiser.
The main problem is, I fear, an inadequate supply of valium and intoxicating liquor to quieten the concerns of those private owners of Tiger Moths who very occasionally permit one of my highly experienced relations to fly their aircraft.
Cheers,
Trapper 69
PS – Rendcomb is utterly magic as well as Utterly Butterly. A jewel in the crown of heritage aviation unlike anywhere else I know of in the world. However, as others have said, it is a very private place.

They did have a rather good airshow there after it had been reopened, and I have (somewhere) pics of the day. From memory, there was a great attendance, including the SE5e, a Fokker Triplane replica, a Waco (cabin version) Caudron Luciole, Great Lakes, Stearpersons, and some nutter in a Tiger Moth – our own Trapper.
So, yes, rlangham, a great spot for an airshow!
Cheers

Melve just about sums it all up, the officers mess is still there and there are some facinating pics there, some other original buildings do survive and Aerosuperbatics have there HQ in what was the Engine Sheds.
At certain times when flying in the sumer you can still see the outline of where the WW! hangars were in the grass! A chatity airshow is held there every few years. A wonderfull place but as Melve says a very private place and not open to the casual visitor

Reondcomb is a privately-owned airstrip on the site of an RFC base. Torquil Norman bases his collection there and it is the home of the Utterly Butterlys. There have been charity shows there but it is not open to casual visitors as it is a working business.
There are one or two original buildings there and there was talk about ten years ago of opening it as a museum but that didn’t happen.
