-The logical extension to the standard ‘Will it be at ‘Legends’ threads-
Daydreaming whilst eating my lunchtime baked potato in the shadow of a Shackleton and Hunter, the following idea entered my head…
…Would it be possible to create an airshow, following the tried and tested format of Flying Legends, moving the era forwards a few years and switching the theme to classic jets. Where could it be staged? Duxford is maybe not best suited to large groups of high performance jets… presumably Kemble would be a logical choice.
Maybe it could be some thing like this:
1)HUNTER TAILCHASE
This is the equivalent of the Spitfire scramble that was a great opening to last years ‘Legends. The three Delta two seaters could emulate the Griffon Spits with swooping low passes and immelmans. The background could be filled with a tail chase of various other marks, anything goes.. from the nice duck egg green prototype lookalike to a nice pointy T8M, and Miss Demeanour of course!
2)EARLY DAYS
Whilst Flying Legends has hawker biplanes, the Gladiator and Jungmeisters to show the thirties ‘state of the art’ that WWII fighters grew from, this airshow could have a couple of Meteors (AACF, and maybe a Martin Baker one… although I realise their flying hours are like hen’s teeth) and a reproduction Me262, maybe Paul Allen might like to provide the real thing?
3)HEAVY BOMBERS
How about a visiting B52, or at least convince one to visit a nearby airfield (….if I didn’t say it, somebody would!) to be the equivalent the Sally B, this could be a good time for a Vulcan… (I’ll get my coat…. hang on, I will finish the post first).
4)de HAVILLAND
While ‘Legends has massed Rapides, how about a mixed ‘V’ formation of Venoms and Vampires, followed at a safe distance by the mighty Sea Vixen?
5)RANDOM FORMATION
The Sabre, T-33 and Canberra ‘163, for no better reason than they look good together!
6)CLASSIC TANKERS
Whilst it is still possible, a leisurely flypast of a TriStar with a VC10 on each wingtip.
7)MYSTERY FOREIGN VISITOR
~Insert speculation here~
8)JET PROVOSTS/STRIKEMASTERS
A formation led by Kennet’s nice silver mark1, maybe one of the more sporty Strikemasters could peel off and engage in a dogfight with a Harrier… or something along those lines!
9)COASTAL PATROL
A Nimrod with a Gannet on each wing. (PS Turboprops, especially double Mambas are allowed…. my rules 😀 )
Maybe the navy Sea Hawk could join in at this point? Possibly joined by the FRADU black hawks team, as a Hawker/Hawk themed flyby.
10)CLASSIC AIRLINER
Off the top of my head, the ETPS BAC 1-11 would fit the bill, some proper noise!
11)GNAT ATTACK!
Does exactly what it says on the tin, as many Gnats as possible, low level, maybe Ray Hanna in one of them!
12)BALBO
Big noisy specatcle…. one of the Gnats could play ‘Joker’.
What do you all reckon, what else would you have taking a starring role? What have I forgotten (apologies to any classic jet operators i have forgotten… it is getting late!)
Over to you!

Back on subject, it is a good point that the ‘Jet Legends’ idea looks like a complete financial nightmare, but then, today, starting from a blank sheet of paper, anybody proposing the Flying Legends concept would be told the same thing. What ‘legends has is the established reputation to attact a large audience to part with a significant ‘once a year’ handful of cash, knowing that, failing a complete washout/thunderstorm, they WILL NOT GO HOME DISSAPOINTED. it is this reputation that holds the whole thing together.
The challenge for a jet version would be to establish this kind of solid reputation, thinking about it more the idea of a fast/pointy/loud/with twinkly lights jet show might even be more appealing to the general public as well as the enthusiasts who can identify jets by their ‘blue note’.
This actually makes for quite a good debate, with my point of view thrown in from the ‘blinkered youthful enthusiasm’ corner. Don’t worry, I’ll learn, some day….
;)[/QUOTE]
Think back over the last few years and what Airshows have been voted ‘best of the year?
The two shows at Coventry,
Kemble classic jets show
The hunter 50th anniversary show again Kemble.
The last few Little Gransden shows?
and I cant remember the rest! 😮
but my point is they were all different from the run of the mill shows, now I am not knocking the rest of the shows I enjoy them all, when I get can there and if these new charges come in and the no. of shows dwindle I will be as fed up as the next guy ,but you have to keep coming up with new things to keep the airshow circuit fresh and most of what has been suggested to appear is available now some of it not for much longer!
Okay I admit I dont have a clue what is involved in running an airshow but if something like this was done I bet you would get a good crowd.
Okay soap box back in the shed. 😉

Hopefully one day – following the Rapide/Dominie formation last year it may be possible to have a Beech 18 formation… how cool would that be – i can think of at least 5 attendees! Well, in theory!
Don’t worry Ben, We can always mod your Beech 18 with a pair of PT-6s and a nosewheel!

Now this is what the forum is all about. A good bit of daydreaming.
Anyone got enough money to sponsor a Comet / Britannia flyby?

By: mike currill - 23rd June 2005 at 13:22
How about the Swedish J29 Barrel or a Lansen as the foreign visitor?
Can I be greedy and ask for both. At this rate we’d have a four day show with no two days the same so you’d have to attend all four days or miss out.
By: TEXANTOMCAT - 23rd June 2005 at 08:36
Make it a two day show and say it will never be repeated for cost and aicraft availabilty reasons get it advertised widely and pray for good weather!
Planning starts Friday afternoon at ‘The Old MIll ‘ Bagington. 😀 :diablo:
Ps try to get loads of people off the forum involved Melvyn can commentate ,Damien B, MOTF etc Advertising,Texan Tomcat legalities,OAG and Bucc society ops and anyone else who feels like helping. 😀
Pps sorry Will for hijacking the thread.
COOOOL! Who do i send the invoice to? :diablo:
By: duxfordhawk - 22nd June 2005 at 22:39
That would comprise of an ex-FRADU TT.18 Canberra and GA11 and T8 Hunters of course 😀
I would agree with that.
By: stringbag - 22nd June 2005 at 22:36
Followed by a Canberra flying with two hunters, With solo Canberra display and a Hunter duo routine,

Not sure where i would locate such a show but for arguement sake i say Biggin Hll as it had a inportant role in early jet history with Meteor and Hunter squadrons based there.
I would start the show with a Seafury, and Bearcat duo, Showing the ultimate in piston Engine Aircraft,Then say thats as far as pistons could go and then have a Meteor and Me262 display, Then a Mig15 and F-86 Sabre, Followed by a Canberra flying with two hunters, With solo Canberra display and a Hunter duo routine, I would follow this with a T-33 and T-37, and if possible a Skyhawk too, Then would have Seavixen, vampire and venom display but not as a tailchase for obvious reasons, I would then have a nice Solo with Miss D.
I would then move on to a Ex Soviet section possibly doing a fly past with its USAF rival. i.e Mig-17 and Supersabre, F-4 Phantom and Mig-21(and our beloved Lightning too), Then finally a F-15 Eagle and Su-27 Flanker, All thes Aircraft can do a solo stint.Would have modern show stopper like the F-18f Superhornet.
I would have the Breitling team involved just because the L-39 looks lovely in those colours.
I would have a British jet trainer flypast including Jet provost, Gnat, Hunter T-7 and Hawk.
Have all the RAF current jets but in particular the Harrier and Typhoon, I would include a F-16 as its one of the most sucessful fighters to have been built.
I would hope to end with a Vulcan display or a mass Bilboa.
Theres plenty of other jets that could be added as treats many already been mentioned.
By: stringbag - 22nd June 2005 at 22:30
A Sea Hawk, Hunter, Sea Vixen and Hawk formation would look good I’m sure.
But wait, that has been done already 🙂

Brilliant!
Location? Bruntingthorpe! Why Lightnings x 2 based,Buccaners x2? based ,Dh Comet based, Victor k2 based ,Vulcan ok presently in bits based, oh and a bloody long runway suitable for B52 ops, and near the centre of the country and near a motorway. 😀
Foreign participants Viggen still available just ,Draken, F104, F4 phantoms still available,Mig 21 from Romania and a Bear to round it off with flourish!
Alaso what about some Wasps and whirlwinds and the Sikorsky form germany? and a wessex from?
