F4's Spotted in the UK?

A friend of mine gave me a telephone call on Friday 17th June. Ok I here you say, so what? Well he told me that he was parked up in his wagon just on the outskirts of RAF Wittering having a bit of a ce’ este (I think that how you spell it!) when he said he was woken up by a really loud aircraft noise. Me thinking he was going to tell me that a Harrier had taken off, was quite surprised when he said that, as he looked out of his vehicle over to the base, a squadron of what he best described as nine German airforce F4 Phantoms, proceeded in front of by one all over Red Phantom, screaming over head in formation! Is this true? Did anybody else witness this phanominon, or were they just a phantom of his imagination!?
If it was true, what were they doing here? Can anybody help??

Maybe:

F-4F’s from JG 71 Richthofen, based at Wittmund ? – Red leader could be a special painted kite in unit colours……
