Harvard OY-IIB crash (June 2005)

It is with great sadness I have to report, that Harvard OY-IIB crashed today at 3pm during a practice flight at Karup Air Base. Both the pilot and the rearseat passenger were killed. The Harvard was flying a practise formation with a Norwegian Harvard in preparation for tomorrows RDAF airshow. Reportedly the aircraft entered a turn without sufficient airspeed resulting in a fatal stall leading to the crash.

Very sad news indeed. ID of the pilot has not been released yet, but I fear it was Arne Moesgรฅrd. No matter what, my thoughts are with the fammilies of those that lost their lives.

I read half those posts before seeing that it happened last year. Thank God it is not a ‘new’ accident, though no doubt the families are still very much affected.

We can only hope that the conclusions of the report will be read and understood by others.

The final accident investigation report has now been published. (Mostly in Danish).

www.havarikommissionen.dk

go to “luftfart”

go to “rapporter” – “2005” – “Harvard 2 OY-IIB” – “endelig ..”

In short: “Air Display practise. After formation take off RWY27L. “IIB” lead, No. 2 on the right side, right turn, (agreed climbing settings 2.000 RPM, 30 MP “Hg”). Winds 310 degrees, 11 – 13 knots (Gust min – max. 7 – 18 knots. Max. x-wind RWY27 constantly 15 knots from right) (10 Min. average). Left turn back downwind for a “09” pass, 379′ AGL (apprx.) towards display line. Too early left turn, not taking wind into account. Low speed (100 mph aprx.) and increasing wing drop on lead. Wingman broke off right. Left wing of “IIB” partially stalled, incipient spin, too low altitude to recover. Maybe pilot concentrating too much on display line. Non survivable crash due to impact forces and fire. (Fire was put out by Air Station Fire Department two minutes after crash alarm).”

Harvards can bite hard

So true, sadly!

From the initial report above it seems the wing disconnecting itself from the rest of the aircraft wasn’t the visible cause. The AD’s concern the U.S built T-6s and Canadian built Harvard’s of their respective countries. The UK CAA has actioned inspections based on the U.S AD. Whether the Danish authorities have asked for this
from their owners remains to be seen – however I should imagine that most European
owners are aware of it and have taken action of their own accord.

I can confirm that OY-IIB had just passed a Non Destructive Testing programme which was done right after the US issued that safety alert. Nothing was found to be wrong with the Harvard.

Harvards are Grounded – aren’t they?

I thought that ADs from the FAA and Transport canada had effectively grounded the Harvards – or had this pair had the necessary inspections carried out? Hope it was not the wing dropping off which led to the crash.

Harvards can bite hard. My deepest sympathy to the families involved; however why were there two on board in an airshow practice? Totally unnecessary. Such flying carries additional risk, why double it in terms of risk to people. I have little doubt that both occupants were enjoying themselves hugely and doing something they loved; but one family too many is grieving today.
When will we ever learn……………..???????????????

I was thinking the same thing. You are right though in saying that they were probably both enjoying themselves greatly up until it all went wrong. I know for a fact that if Neil had been told he couldn’t fly in the back of the Firefly he would have been most upset (and knowing Neil he would have told you so in no uncertain terms). Of course, the fact that Neil, and the passenger in this Harvard, were both right where they wanted to be, will not bring them back to us. The sad thing is that this is not a new lesson to be learned. More like History repeating itself. once again, my deepest sympathy for the families and friends of both of those lost in this accident.

The pilot has been confirmed as being Arne Moesgaard. A huge loss for his family and the Danish vintage and warbird scene.

Official news from FTK including a small photo of the wrecked aircraft
