HFL/ARC Open Day 2005 – your view

Saturday 11th June will see the second (annual) open day at HFL and ARC.

Last year’s event was superb and this year appears to be the new improved version with the chance to sit in the cockpit of a Spit and one of the historic jets that they operate. One lucky visitor will get a flight in the T6.

An airshow by a number of the ARC operated a/c, lunch and a chance to catch up on the progress of the Blenheim rebuild at close quarters are also on the programme.

I recall some lively debate over last years £55 entry price. This year it will be £75.

Firstly who’s going (So I know who to look out for) and second whether you are going or not, what would you expect to get for £75?

Many thanks. I look to forward saturday and will duly post some pics in the evening. Don’t forget to give us a big grin as you give us a nice topside pass.

Flying scheduled to start at about 1515.

MM will you be strapping on your “fighter pilot” persona for the day or are you in the tower again? Didn’t I see you on a picture on the notice board today? “Little something or other”……. 😀 😀 😀

JBS – Look forward to meeting you. I will be easy to spot wearing a blue oval badge that reads ‘Aeroplane – Admits One’. 🙂

I don’t recall seeing a schedule as yet. Last year we were handed a programme of events on arrival.

JBS – Look forward to meeting you. I will be easy to spot wearing a blue oval badge that reads ‘Aeroplane – Admits One’. 🙂

Good news, I hope to make it to one of these events soon, but for now, as last year, the pictures on the forum will be something of a highlight 🙂

If the advert in Aeroplane had been read closely, it quite clearly states under the heading of ‘ALSO INCLUDED IN THE DAY:’ is – Flightline walk and bags of photo opportunities[U]… !!!

There were two editions of A.M. which published photos of last years event. As co-organisers it would seem a little odd that A.M. organise an event that they cannot cover themselves. Several of the pictures that I posted on the Forum also appeared in those copies A.M.

Given that this is an open day and the hangar is likely to have been sanitised of ‘Area 51’ items, my best guess is that the aircraft on view can be photographed for whatever use.

The points raised regarding photos for personal use are noted but I recall the issue being that the BBMF Hurricane had been photographed and published in AI without permission from the RAF/MOD or HFL/ARC. Other privately owned a/c were also pictured at HFL and Booker and the pictures sold to AI with less that accurate information.

As the statement that Mike posted reads, ‘enthusiast tours’, I see this as different to a full ‘Open Day’.

I shall certainly respect HFL/ARC’s wishes (as I always do) if they do not want photos on the web or in magazines. Clarification will be sought and posted here.

My view on what one gets for £75 is – top value.

Incidentally I may have one too many tickets. PM me if you are interested.

Mike and Roobarb – I understand their sentiment but I believe that if you wish nothing to appear on the ‘net’ – you don’t permit photography. Sad state of affairs but if you forward a picture to anyone over the net it isn’t secure and very likely to be copied.

Roobarb – If think if you check you will find a reply from ARC regarding the use of pictures taken there being for personnal consumption and not for press use. This is somewhat different to what you have stated but please by all means check.

I don’t think he will be plastering his pictures! After the last one there seems to have been a little bit of displeasure about pictures of the project aircraft getting into the press! Bizarre arrangement but look in AM a few months ago!

I sincerely hope he WILL put up his excellent pictures for all to see. If it was “NO PHOTOGRAPHY” doesn’t it strike you that it might just say that in the advert? My understanding is that the pictures put into “Aircraft I**ustrated” were done without the knowledge of the resident companies and without their permission. They also wrote innaccurate copy of what was going on at HFL/ARC and what the intentions were with some of the projects. If the person concerned was so “up on the gen” then why did the said magazine publish a retraction and appology the next issue? Surely the advert is quite clear that it is an open day with behind the scenes views and a chance to get close up, and talk to the pilots, engineers etc? They would hardly be saying “would all enthusiasts please leave their cameras at home and don’t ask us about anything you haven’t already read on the Forum, in Flypaper, A*roplane, AI, etc etc etc. People wanting that sort of treatment would be better off visiting Hawkinge, wouldn’t they?

I would imagine that the person winning the flight in the Harvard will come away well-pleased with having spent their £75, being as the going rate for a 20min flight in such a plane in this country is about £350+. I guess its like an expensive lottery ticket-if you win its great, if you don’t then sure, you might have spent the money in a better way. How many of us have bought a lottery ticket every week of the year and found we’re £52 down at the end? At least this is a lot more interesting than queuing to buy a ticket in some newsagent that still hasn’t got your latest aircraft mag’ in yet! Oh yes, and you get to park yourself in the hot seat of the Forums most famous aircraft type! It’s up to the individual where they spend their money……how much is it for a day at a football match and how much is their food and just how boring is that? I’m sure it will be a great day for those that decide they want to spend their money in this way and who knows, if we’re really lucky Merlin 70 might just plaster the forum with his pictures again! 🙂

Well said 😉 😉 Anna 😉
