Help to bring some of The few back to the U.K. for the BoB monument unveiling

This Saturday and Sunday (4th & 5th June) the Battle of Britain Historical Society are holding a signing event at Airport House, Croydon. The aim is to raise as much money as possible to help towards the travel expenses of Battle of Britain veterans living overseas, thus enabling them to attend the unveiling of the monument in September.

The list of those attending, at the moment, is Wing Commander Ken Mackenzie (43 & 501 Squadron), Sergeant Leopald Heimes (235 Squadron), Flight Lieutenant Joseph Chamberlain (235 Squadron), Flight Lieutenant Trevor Gray (64 Squadron), and Flight Lieutenant Donald Hulbert (257 & 501 Squadrons) with possibly one more name to be added. Please bear in mind that this list can change due to illness etc.

Leopold Heimes is now the only living Belgian (of 29) who fought with us in the Battle of Britain (235 Squadron – Blenheims). He later retrained as a fighter pilot and flew Spitfires with 350 (Belgian) Squadron. Much later on he got his true wish and flew in Coastal Command on flying boats. Post war he flew Dakotas – including one in the film “A Bridge too far”

The cost per item will be £15, with a limit of three items per person. If you would like to attend, please contact Gerry Burke on 0208 303 3515 to book which day you will be going.

The £6300 raised at our museum’s signining event on the 15th May will be going towards bringing some of these Gentlemen over to the U.K.

Updates to re this event can also be found on the BoBHS discussion board at http://disc.server.com/Indices/105008.html

Bump.

If there weren’t so many damn stickies I’d suggest this – but everyone ignores the stickies.

Three of the veterans signing have never done so before. Not bad for £15 per item, and you get to help a very derserving cause.

hello,
I am very proud that Leopold Heimes will attend this meeting .I know him very well and his self effacement was responsible of the fact that he was during a long time ignored by many people including (of course ) belgian authorities .
