pictured this engine at Bangalore Technology Museum – identified as a “Packard” Engine – Looks like a Merlin, but not quite like it.. Any guesses?

The top left engine is a sleeve valve engine made by Bristol and looks to be a Centaurus (then again I can’t tell a Hercules from a Centaurus in a photo).
Cheers

Other interesting stuff from the Bangalore Museum.
Two Radials – one a Wright Cyclone and the other a Pratt and Whitney,
A replica of a Wright Flyer (An Avon in the background)
Plus there is a HF-24 1R outside..

Weren’t the Meteor tanks engines built in the UK..?
It was the Meteor tank engine production facility that Rolls Royce exchanged for the Rover jet engine facility at Barnoldswick thus entering RR into the jet age.

MTB’s are very cool! However the MTB i saw today had no engines in it at all, or propellers for that matter!

This engine is often confused with the Merlin but has absolutely nothing in common with the Merlin.
Other than the same sort of wonderous cacophony of sound on full chat….. 😀
As a youngster our then next door neighbour had been a Oerlikon gunner on RN MTB’s in the Med and he used to spend hours telling me stories of the MTB’s in the war. I’ll always remember how he used to describe the noise was incredible when all 3 engines were throttled up to full speed….. 😀 😀

Yep, definitely a PT boat engine, don’t know where they got the data plate from though, as it says aircraft carburretor. Then again, on the second link AndyG posted it says it was developed from the 1925 Liberty aircraft engine, so maybe its the original engine?

Thanks – I didn’t imagine that this would be a land version!!!

Definately looks like a Packard 4M 2500 as fitted to the Royal Navy D-class MTB’s.

Looking at the pictures I think its a ‘meteor’ tank engine, this was essentially a merlin converted for land use in tanks. There was also a marine version used in air sea rescue launches etc. It definately not an aeroplane version with the PTO it appears to have on it.
