In addition to the signing this Sunday (15th), we will be holding another signing event at the museum on Bank Holiday Monday, 30th May, when former Luftwaffe fighter pilot Ernst Poschenreider (a good friend to the museum) will be available to sign any books or prints etc. that you would like to bring along. Hopefully we will also be able to arrange some company for Ernst in the form of a couple of RAF vetereans. This will be a fundraiser for the museum itself, and the money raised will go towards a new ‘high-tech’ detector to help us with our excavations.
Ernst served with the 7th Staffel of JG53, and was shot down on the 30th September 1940, whilst escorting a bombing raid against London. A forced landing at Broom Hill, Strood, near Rochester, Kent, resulted in Ernst becoming a POW.
Further details – times, signing fee, and the other veterans who will be present – will be given when I get them.
Meanwhile, here’s a picture of Ernst in 1940, and a very interesting one of him taken when the museum took him back in 1990 to where he force-landed in 1940. The lady in the photo just happened to be passing, and on hearing Ernst’s German acent, asked if he was the pilot who had landed there in 1940. It turned out that as a little girl she was one of the sightseers who had come to see the German fighter, and remembered seeing Ernst. How’s that for a coincidence!

I don’t know if you still have contact with the “young girl” concerned, but you could put together a realy “” set of signatures, to whit a downed pilot, an occular witness and a successful, but unacknowleged opponent. just an idea.

Ernst is indeed going to have some company, as Peter Ayerst, author of ‘Spirit of the blue’ has very kindly agreed to join us on the 30th.
Despite the fact that he shared in the destruction of an He111 on the 14th August 1940, he is not accepted as a Battle of Britain pilot as he was an instructor at No 7 OTU at the time.
Peter will be bringing some copies of his book along, so if you don’t already have a copy this will be a great chance to buy one & get it signed too. A new pencil sketch of Ernst will also be available to buy on the day.
