Colin,

I think this must be Spitfire N3068 of No 72 Sqn, flown by F/O Paul Davies-Cooke, which was shot down by a Bf109 over Sevenoaks at 9.40am on the 27th September 1940. It crashed into Nos 70 & 72 Queensway, West Wickham, Bromley. F/O Davies-Cooke baled out, but fell dead near Hayes Station. The only civilian casualty was Mrs Carpenter, from No 66 ‘injured in the shelter’, presumably belonging to either No 70 or 72.

‘The Battle of Britain, Then & Now Mk V’ has photos of the crash site on P797.

Thank you all, I dont think its the Ray Holmes Hurricane, poss Spitfire which crashed on a house killing the pilot and occupants of the house. Imsure we will find it.

15 September 1940, Sgt Ray Holmes was the pilot of a 504 Sqn Hurricane P2725 (TM~B) that rammed a Do17 that he thought was intent on bombing Buckingham Palace and then bailed out. His a/c crashed into the junction between Buckingham Palace rd and Ebury Bridge, the tailess bomber crashed into part of Victoria Station.

Substantial remains of the Hurricane were recovered from a depth of 12ft under the junction during an excavation on 29/30 May 2004 during a live televised Channel 5 programme during which Ray Holmes present. Though he was more interest in the young lady TV Presenter, than the actual dig.

Wasn’t the Buck House episode(s) Hurricane? I thought Ginger Lacy (Hurricane pilot) was credited with the He111 that bombed Buck house. The TV archaeology prog about the pilot who rammed the a/c was hurricane as well – but I dint see the prog..

I think you have two or three separate incidents and two TV programmes confused there, I’m sure someone will straighten them out for you though. There was a programme re the Buckingham palace ramming, the pilot is still alive. I think that’s the incident alluded to in the BoB film where the guy lands in someone’s greenhouse. The TV programme for that incident was not Spitfire Ace (which trained several young pilots on ML407) but a one-off special on Channel 5.
