Did anyone see this? Michael Aspel interviewed an ex WWII pilot who had come in to show a trophy he had “obtained” at the end of the war. It was either a double candle holder (or light fitting, not sure!) from one of Hitler’s premises. When asked how he got it back, he replied “in my Spitfire!”. Marvellous little story and I’m sure the pilot was Ray Holmes. Can anyone confirm this?

Yep, I gasped at that too. That item appeared on Antiques Roadshow the previous week (Shugburgh Hall, Staffs.)

I saw this, it was indeed Ray Holmes. Ray was the pilot of the Hurricane (well bits of it) which was recently dug up in central London, it crashed after taking the tail off of a Dornier (I think) that was bombing Buck House (again, I think)
And I’m sure someone else can confirm the details of Ray’s “incident” over London
Yes and yes. The Dornier was actually filmed coming down, sans tail and outer wing panels (outboard of the engine nacelles), and this appeared in Spitfire Ace’s last episode, and possibly even the ITV Battle of Britain programme screened in 2000.
