Old 1960's British airshow slides

I was going through some of Mum and Dad’s old slides today and I found a box of old slides that Dad got when he bought a second hand projector in the 1980’s (the owners didn’t want their memories of a trip round Europe for some reason). They’ve lain in Mum and Dad’s cupboard for decades, but when I took a look today there is a handful from a 1960’s airshow in (probably) Britain.

I have tried to scan them with little success, as I don’t quite know the procedure to scan slides and the scanner’s manual has disappeared. As Dad is very ill in hospital I cannot ask him where he put the instruction manual, so these are a smaple of the photos but in very poor form. The actual slides are clear and vibrant and look great, it is just poor scans and an attempt to enhance the contrast so you can see what’s in them that make them look crap.

If you want to see them properly and all of them, let me know. Can anyone advise how to scan slides with an Epson Perfection 4870 PHOTO scanner?

Are the missiles in the background of the first “crap” Bloodhounds? Just curious, because these were one of the big secrets of the Swiss airforce until well into the nineties 😮

PS: They were all alinged Eastwards, just in case… 😮

Yep, but believe me, the slides themselves are a hundred times better than the scans I did. You’ll make an improvement I’m sure.

Hi Dave

No worries – it;s a pleasure.

Just remember that the images are pretty crap and I haven’t learnt to walk on water yet so we shall see what can be done.

Kindest regards
John

Haven’t got a scanner at the moment Dave! My Epson that I had in the UK had two flat black plastic plates, with holes and groves, one for a neg strip, the other for 35mm slides. The other item was a light source, a white box in the case of my machine which plugged in the back and shone a light through the slide in the frame into the scanner bed; you left the normal lid off.

The Epson scanner I had at the museum had the black plate hidden in the lid, with the light source intergal in the lid itself. You clicked out the foam cover and all was revealed.

Good luck!

On further investigation it seems you have to have a provided holder to put the slides into to scan them. Lord knows where Dad has stashed that. I will endeavour to find out and try to do better (and more) scans later in the week.

If I cannot work it out, I can send them to somone who knows what they’re doing if anyone wants to volunteer.

Some of those will almost certainly be Farnborough, Dave. Can’t help with the particular scanner. You have looked on the Epson website, havent you? 😉
