RAF Museum Cosford Hidden Treasures

I am totally new to this forum but thought some of you may be interested in seeing some pictures that I took inside the RAF Museum, Cosford storage hanger. I can email the pictures (big file) or post them here but I have no idea how. If somebody can outline how to post pics I will do.

There are some items on this list that would go well towards balancing the Cold War display.

Anyone know what the owners intentions are?

Nice to see the KZVIII still around, albeit out of it’s natural environment.. 🙁 When will we ever see it back in the air?

Cosford and the “Mitchell Collection”

Though this report is a bit dated I post in the hope it proves useful to someone
Posted last year on another group by Dave Walker and reproduced with his permission

I visited Sleap on 13/10/06 & saw the following “Mitchell” aircraft in
a new purpose-built hangar:
G-RIDE Stephens Akro model A
G-BADW Pitts S-2A Special
G-AWIW Stampe SV-4B
G-AFRZ Miles M.17 Monarch (in poor condition)
N49272 Fairchild PT-23
N56421 Ryan ST-3KR
N1344 Ryan ST-3KR

I was told that the remainder of the collection would follow from
Cosford in due course – may already be there by now. These comprise :
G-AEUJ Miles M.11A Whitney Straight
G-AYKZ KZ-VIII
N58566 Convair BT-15 Vultee Valiant

I have also got this to add if it helps

I have done N number enquiries on all of his American aircraft.
They are registered to
Name FLYING HERITAGE INC
Street 280 ARNETT AVENUE
City VENTURA State CALIFORNIA Zip Code 93003
County VENTURA
Country UNITED STATES

Though they are all overdue their tri-annual FAA review.
Hope it helps
Be lucky
David

that definitely needs to be restored and put on display in the experimental hangar!

Hell yeah! I wonder if there is anybody still around who worked on the project who could help them put it back together…………..that photo of the nearly complete prototype sat in the middle of a hangar is one of the most haunting of the post war era as far as aviation industry goes.

I have absolutely no idea of the inner workings at cosford but there has been considerable interest in the P.1121 in recent years and I have no doubt that it would make for a fantastic exhibit, especially if they could put a Gyron next to it.

The fuselage in the last but one picture is (I think) the remains of the prototype of the Hawker P.1121 Air Superiority Strike Fighter circa 1958. There is a wing and cockpit section lurking in the hanger as well. It would have been powered by a Gyron PS.26-6 with a projected speed of Mach 2. (please correct me if I am wrong!) I have a pic of the cockpit section (from a distance) if anyone is interested.

Hawker P1121

I WILL DO ANYTHING FOR A COPY OF THAT BARRY HYGATE BOOK. I MEAN ANYTHING

I forked out $118 (cost plus postage) for that book listed on Abebooks in the US three months ago after being outbid in a serious bidding battle on E-bay (started at £28, Joined battle with 8 minutes to go at £58. Lost at £90+ when my maximum bid for £130 went in seconds too late). Book’s worth every peney. (you tell me where you can get 1-72 scale plans for all of those aircraft for less!) P1121 Fuselage forward of the wing trailing edge and a wing were completed before the project was chopped  😡 😡 😡 😡 .

Rich thanks for posting your pics.

I have been asking questions for years about the P1121 and always drawn a blank. It is great to see that it survived. The last I knew of it was at Cardington, but when the reserve/restoration items moved to RAF Wyton, the staff seemed not to know what had happened to it.

Attached is a picture of the P1121 mock up copied from British Experimental Jet Aircraft, 1941-1986, Barrie Hygate, Argus Books, ISBN 1-85486-010-0. This details an excellent piece of history with photos specification and drawings. Such a shame it never saw production and service.

It would be great to see the parts that have survived, assembled and on display.

Any chance you could PM details of how you got access?

regards

tc

Mike J found it in a bookshop in York I think it was, and sent me the details, I got it for 32.99………….even for a book as relatively rare as this one seems to be, 65 smackers is allot.

Thanks for remembering though……..

Gosh, I got mine for £5 from Argus as a special offer when they remaindered them!

Storage Pics – Hudson

Feel free to ask me any questions but I can’t gurantee answers!

Rich

Am I wrong in presuming that the Lockheed Hudson in the top/middle pic’ is the one & the same a/c that’s now restored & residing at Hendon ???

(make my day & tell me it’s another !!!). 😎

What a relief to see that KZ-VIII G-AYKZ is in reasonably good condition 🙂

@Skybolt and Arm Waver:

Skandinavisk Aero Industri A/S in Copenhagen only completed one KZ-VIII, this being the above aircraft. A second one was started, but not finished. This was bought by a German collector who completed it and later sold it back to Denmark where it is now based at Stauning with the reg OY-DRR. This would presumably have been the one seen there. A Danish enthusiast scratch-built a third one (a tremendous achievement) in the Nineties and installed a 4-cylinder horizontally-opposed engine in it.

I’m glad I bought mine years ago. 🙂
Having just seen the cover price of £32.50, I find it hard to believe I would have paid that for it 10 years or so ago. I assume it must have been remaindered.
