Hi,
To true on langauge conversion..
Didn’t think of the other order of date, but i think it might have been easy to type a 5 instead of 4 on a typewriter, or as you say it is the date of printing of the photo.
Sticking to any thread, I personally think is always important,
On serious note this thread is afterall, discussing the potential loss of a halifax crew.
Happy easter to all, hope most remember what this weekend is all about.

I am willing to accept that he could have been a major at the time – I was Babelfishing and we all know how the language and its meanings gets screwed up when translating with no working knowledge…
What is the correct way of translating dates in German? 3/5/43 makes it the third of May, 1943, to me yet it could be done the (ahem) American way – thus making it March the fifth, 1943; none are marked down on or around that date as being shot down by Streib, though, and no Halifaxes are given the location of Venlo for their demise…
Since the base used by Streib was Venlo maybe that was where this photo was printed, and 3/5/43 was the date it was printed?

As this is in Holland it is not usual that the trees are without leaves in May. However in early April this is normal, so my guess the pic was shot earlier than May, so the April date might be right. BW Roger

Another possibility to consider – data for this claim comes from Tony Woods Luftwaffe losses site

Hptm. Herbert Lütje 8./NJG 1 Halifax 6359G 3 km. N. Venlo: 5.800 m. 00.08

A/c type and location match but different pilot for claim and date differs too.

Just checked multimap, and Vierlingsbeek is just north of venlo, so it is possible that it was this date & a/c.

possibly date is a typo ?
Streib is quoted as Maj , at least as early as Jan ’43 , his claim for that date, [haven’t checked back further].

13.01.43 Maj. Werner Streib Stab I./NJG 1 Lancaster

Personally think a 05 was typed instead of a 04 , and think most likely date is :-

03.04.43 Maj. Werner Streib Stab I./NJG 1 Halifax
03.04.43 Maj. Werner Streib Stab I./NJG 1 Halifax S.W. Vierlingsbeek
03.04.43 Maj. Werner Streib Stab I./NJG 1 Halifax 3 km. Pfalzberge

Anyone know locations and they can eliminate one or two a/c ?

A few slight problems with the details given…
No Halifaxes fell that night, and only one was lost whilst training in the afternoon – according to Bomber Command Losses 1943. Also Werner Streib was only promoted to Major (apparently) at the beginning of June 1943. He was later credited with shooting down 5 Lancasters in 30 minutes in a pre-production He 219A0 (V-9) over the night of 11-12/6/43 on the types first operational mission, after they were delivered to NJG 1 at Venlo in April 1943 – it would be very unusual for the bomber itself to have come down in Venlo, so I conclude that the print or caption was made on 3/5/43 at Venlo about an earlier incident; how much earlier might depend on how involved Streib was with getting the units new He219s up to operational standard.
Can’t find a list of Streibs tally on the web, though.
