British Cockpit Green

British Cockpit Green; does anyone know the reason behind the adoption and use of this colour in British military aircraft? Did it have anti-corrosion and preservative properties as did its US counter part, which was a mix of zinc chromate and lamp black? So far I have drawn a blank on web searches and in the books I have access to. Any help would be much appreciated.

Perhaps it’s the same reason why the Russians use that odd turquoise-like green in their cockpits? It’s ment to reduce the amount of adapting the pilot has to do between switching his view from a bright outside view to a darker look at the instrument panel.

yes and use of traditional red light and uv cockpit lights…..more to do with night ops
….green was good for using all ambient light during night flying given poor cockpit lights and luminous dials…..a negative was reflections….as cockpit lighting improved needed to reduce reflections in transparencies which are a distraction. So went black…….with NVG well, all bets off!

I always wondered if it was the nullifying effect a green background has on blood – hence it’s use in surgical theatres etc. Probably not in this case but you never know…

With Ford being a US company we in the UK decided to be different and delete black from the options list.

The reason for green is to counter excessive glare in the cockpit
