One for the photographers – Mossie outside this w/e

As promised some time ago, this is just to let you know that our B35, TA634 will be outside on Saturday morning for a while, whilst we move the hangar around. I cant guarantee it will be in a good position for pictures, but there wont be many opportunities this year, so I thought I would let you know.

The fuselage of the FB6 will probably be outside as well for a while.

Operations start around 10 am, and I guess it will be out for about 2-3 hours.

By all means come along and take pics, but I cant guarantee I will be able to stop and chat.

If anything changes, I will post again!

There are no plans to restore the Mossie to fly at present – too much money would be required!

W4050, whilst being comprehensively restored, will not be restored to ground runnig state – we could not risk any damage to the aircraft by carrying out ground runs. That said, one of the engines will be run in the test cells at Derby; just to show that it has been done right!

A couple of things…
I remember and I think there was a discussion awhile back on wether or not this mossie would be restored to fly. Was there any further news on it or?

W4050, Do they plan on returning this mosquito to ground running condition?

Yep – certainly could be; its before the fabric decomposition got really bad anyway! The Horsa fuselage in the background might tie it down.

I’ve been trying to tie it down a bit closer. Thinking back to my personal circumstances, my best guess is late 1976 or early 1977 for when I took my pictures.

From the sticky tape patches, I reckon it was about 1975/6 – way before my time, as I was still living in Coventry then, and a mere 8/9 yrs old!

Thanks for posting

Somewhere I’ve got some black & white pics I took in the 70s but I’m struggling to work out the year more accurately. TA634 was in roughly the same place but possibly at slightly less of an angle. Is that an info board in front? If so, I’m pretty sure is wasn’t there then.

Absolutely nothing to do with this thread but I’ve just remembered going to what I think must have been the 40th “birthday dinner” for W4050 in the Robin hangar. Surreal.

The way we were.

Here a shot of the Mossie from some years back.

It was in a bunch of slides I borrowed this week.

Can you date this Bruce?

Bruce,

I am hoping to get down to see TA634 out in the sun on Saturday (fingers crossed!). What time does the museum open, as I have not been before. I know you will be busy, but I will try and say hello.

Thanks very much for the heads up on this.

Anyone else going?

Yes, thats why we are moving the hangar around – we are laying the wing down so we can build the leading and trailing edges.

Bruce

Thanks Bruce,

If you ever want to re-unite one of TA122’s undercarriage assemblies with the airframe, it’s on display in our museum on loan from the Aviodrome. It is in excellent condition although one side has been cut away to reveal the rubber shock absorbers.
Cheers

Typical – last weekend I was in sunny Hertfordshire, this weekend I’m back in the frozen north. 🙁

Bruce,

What’s the status on the wing rebuild for TA122? Any progress.

Cheers

Cees
