Gap In The Market (aviation publishing)

Years ago, there was a really useful and inexpensive book called the Vintage Aircraft Directory, compiled by Gordon Riley. Vintage aircraft in the UK were listed by type, with info on owner/base/condition. The last of the series came out in about 1982, and as far as I am aware, there is nothing comparable around today, though Wrecks & Relics covers some of this ground, broadly concentrating on non-flyers.

The directory showed, for instance, that there were twenty DH 89a Rapides, and that 8 were airworthy. In 2005, where is such information easily available? G-info (CAA website) is quite useful, but every entry has to be examined individually. This is not too bad if you are looking at, say, Comper Swifts (3) but not so good for Tiger Moths (182).

Warbirds are quite widely documented, especially Spitfires, needless to say, but the slightly less glamourous types, ie most of them, seem banished to obscurity. So where are those Ansons, Stampes, Ju 52’s ( 6 in 1980), and all the rest.

It seems to me that there is a good opportunity to publish such a guide, and much of the information needed would be available on-line. The useful bit would be to boil it down, and present it in a quick, easy-to-read format.
Anybody want to take this on ?

Glad you liked my efforts. I pretty much gave up all my aviation writing & publishing after “Spitfire Survivors” in 1986. Occasionally think about resurrecting some of my titles but currently don’t really have enough time/inclination.

Cheers

Propstrike,

That is exactly what Scott is doing on the Warbird Resource Group main web site if you visit it will find it broken down to aircraft types.

I’m presentaly working on the Century fighters I know that their is someone working on Navions and Scott is going thru the T-6 files. If you are interested in working on the site send Scott and e-mail I’m sure he would be more then happy for any help. Just pick an aircraft and dive in he has a master file set up all you have to do is impute the information and paste.
