Could it possibly be for training (Navs in particular) aircrew whilst simulating instrument flying? We used to use removable plastic screens to cover the view outside, but our aircraft carry passengers the rest of the time. Perhaps a dedicated training aircraft had the viewing window permanently covered?

This aircraft has both windows over but the ones I am talking about usually only have the right side covered over. I know the ex- Harry Wherreat one that is now in Nanton also had the same thing….

I have a feeling and I’m working completely without references here that Coastal Command might have had some Mk.IVs like that.
They would have been fighters I think–well, you know Mk.IVF’s.
