Sea Fury Winter Maintenance, Part XXIVish

Good news today, as the prop went back on the Sea Fury. Of course it took 7 guys, 1 forklift, and 20 trained lamas, but we got it on.

The new radios are being installed, and much of the wiring is complete. New panel should be ready in about a week.

Also, here’s a shot of the clip wing cub, which is now going for paint. The control surfaces are in the paint booth this week, and the fuselage will go in tomorrow. Silver base, then white base, then yellow. Should fly before the end of May. Unlike Melvyn’s stealth project, everyone is invited for the first flight of the cub. Pictured behind the cub is the prop for the Yak-11 that will be moved to the hanger next week. First flight should be sometime in April/May. The Yak is owned by Bob Chinnery, who has been working on it single handed for over 10 years. I’ll post some photos next week, because it really is something quite special.

Still looking for that spade grip for the Sea Fury…hint hint.

The Sea Fury is coming along nicely. Today we fitted the gear doors and swung the gear several times. The new instrument panel is scheduled to be installed next week, although most of the wiring is now complete. A new control column is being fabricated, and the O2 bottles are also going back in after being hydrostat tested.

Don’t panic Mike, we’ll be ready for Sun N Fun.

Steve

OK, there’s a little work left to do on the new panel… 😉

I’ll let you know in a few weeks…

According to Dennis Sanders the Yak 11 is Sea Fury fast, with good flying qualities and the landing characteristics of a heavy Pitts (somewhat twitchy).

I saw the Yak 11 last year when I was over with Steve and it’s a fantastic bit of workmanship. It’ll look great when it’s finished.
Cheers

Steve,

Any idea what engine is being used in the Yak?

Yes, it’s a P&W R-1830 from a DC-3. The original engine was sold to Kermit Weeks years ago when the project first began. The prop is a cut down DC-3 prop (Hamilton Standard)

And there was me thinking that three blader was going on the Cub… :diablo:

Steve – quick question about the Cub. ‘Clipped Wing’? Wassat all about then?

The clip wing Cub is a factory approved STC that reduces the wing span by one bay, moving the ailerons in much closer to the fuselage. I believe it removes about 4 ft. from either wing, which is fairly significant. Advantages are a much improved roll rate, stronger G loading, and all around more “positive” handling with the higher wing loading. This airplane is being built as light as possible, so she should be a good performer. Non electric, and original cub panel and paint scheme. Should be very fun this summer.

The Sea Fury has an electric standby hydraulic pump, so we can fold the wings in the hanger. Also very useful for doing gear retraction on the jacks.

The Yak is really quite stunning, being painted in a WW2 winter Russian scheme. Lots of white, blue and red. I’m really looking forward to taking her to some shows this summer. I’ll get some photos up next week. I knew if I didn’t mention the Yak someone would ask about the oversized Cub prop!

A Sea Fury video? I’ve actually been looking into those small “helmet” cameras that you see on ebay. Might make for a fun little film.

I was going to ask the same thing, wouldn’t be like the Spitfire & give it higher roll rate would it?

Now I see the problem….. 1 extra blade on the Yak prop, 1 less blade on the Fury prop… Funny old world. Be nice to see the pics of the Yak when you get a chance, good to see the Fury is coming back together.

Now you make that seat at the back nice and comfy now you hear. Mike J is used to a certain level of Luxury.

Looks as if shes coming on nicely. Are the wings manual fold?
