I was present when the cairn was unveiled since my father was killed in the crash. He was Pilot Officer Alexander Gill RAFVR. He was not the pilot of the plane but was a veteran Observer(Navigator) in Bomber Command, with direct experience of 30 bombing missions, and assigned temporarily to 20 Operational Training Unit to train navigators. I am not sure of the cause of the crash but suspect failure of one of the engines or elevator controls.

I would appreciate a copy of any photo of the cairn taken recently but cannot supply the grid reference.

Sandy, I managed to get some information as to where the memorial cairn/crash site was. I’m pleased to tell you that I visited it today on a 23 mile round trip and have lots of pictures for you.

Have sent you a private message (see User CP section) with my e-mail address, asking for yours so look forward to hearing from you.
