Some German aircraft in WW1 actually flew with wooden wheels.

Shortage of rubber for the tyres.

Apparently a lot of kids were born in 1919 for much the same reason.

in case any one was wondering this was done to our Parnell Elf while the Southern Martlet was being finished after it’s restoration and we were faced with a long delay to get the new build wheels necessary for her. It was decided to carry out the engine runs and first flights with these wheels to speed up the long awaited debut of the Martlet.
They were turned out on one of our lathes by Tony Dowson, one of our volunteers, and were far safer than they looked! Honest!!! 😉
