Greetings All. First post! The large VTOL a/c is the Dornier Do-31 VTOL transport and the F-104 looking fighter is the VJ-101. Both of these aircraft flew and were “successful” but didn’t go into production.

Couple of extraordinary looking (VTOL?) things – the Dornier in the courtyard and the F104 lookalike (suspended above the real F104). What are they?

It’s indeed the Deutsches Museum in the center of Munich (S-Bahn station Isartor). The VAK191 and the Do 31 are now in their dedicated aircraft museum in Oberschleissheim (northwestern outskirts of Munich). The Do 335 was reclaimed by the National Air and Space Museum and is (I believe) stored in the US. It was restored by Dornier employees on the condition that it could be exhibited in Munich for a limited period of time. I think it went back in 1990. The other aircraft are still there.

Willy,

yes – it was certainly in the city centre rather than elsewhere – I can remember our coach have a bit of trouble finding somewhere to park

Stieglitz,

it was an interesting couple of hours with a lot of interesting aircraft there. Although like a lot of museums space is at a premium so the exhibits are tightly packed.

I understand that under the heading Transport Museum, you mean the dowton Deutsche Museum.

In the meantime the prototype of the vertical take-off fighter, based on a F-104G moved to Oberschleissheim
