Possible or impossible?

This is probably a stupid question that I already know the answer to, but I’m a massive fan of the soon to be retired F14 Tomcat. What do you think the chances are of getting one on display some where in the UK?
I know they don’t fit into the UK heritage scene very well but neither do aircraft like the F105 and there are two of those over here. Any ideas how I can go about getting one of these big beasties for my back garden? 😀

Yeah the FAAM had F-4S 155848, they swapped it for Scimitar XD220. The F4 is now at East Fortune with the Scimitar in New York.

Doesn’t the FAAM have a US marked F4 ? OK, so the F4 served with the FAA & not the F14, but ……

The FAAM did indeed have a USMC Phantom, as they didn’t have a Fleet Air Arm example at the time. They now of course do have another aircraft, painted up in Royal Navy colours, and on show on their Carrier.

F105s were never based in Europe!

Several units made week or fortnight TDYs to various places like Sculthorpe or Lakenheath but never permanently based.

I think the Fleet Air Arm museum would make a great location for an F14. I just cant think of any good reason why a UK museum would want to display one, to my knowledge the F14 has played no part in British military history, any one beg to differ? (Gulf war I & II collaboration maybe?)

If the purpose of the FAA Museum is to tell the story of Naval aviation, then I’d think there would be a place for a Tomcat. If it’s just “Britcentric”…probably not.
In this day and age I’d hope most decent museums would have more than their country’s (or service’s ) own aircraft….witness the enemy and allied planes at Hendon, and the NMUSAF…and all the foreign stuff at Duxford and Dulles.
In the end it probably has to do with space….

F105s were never based in Europe!

Must have been dreaming then when they used to visit us at Gielenkirchen from their base at Spangdalem in 62/63.

But the F105 was based here, something that obviously never was the case with the 14.

Hmm, maybe the F105 isn’t the best example to have given!

I would like the ability to drool over one without having to keep making trips overseas! Also there is a myriad of surplus F14 airframes at the moment, 10 years from now the pickings probably wont be so rich.

Hi

I don’t think getting an F14 is all that hardsas it’s been done here in Aus before – the issue will be getting it there – you won’t most likely get an airworthy one and then you will have to work out transport – not cheap.

Anyway I think the upshot is there are plenty available and I would have thought FAAM was a likely taker for one.

I suppose there’s a small chance that the American Air Museum at Duxford could get one?
Not sure where they would put it though?

Given the criticism of many American planes on this forum (some in jest, some not), you may be the only one on the island that wants one. 🙂

Might Not Be Impossible

Getting a F-14 might not be all that impossible. I believe the CAF has one stuffed at Midland. I was surprised to see one in a small museum in Tulsa …. probably obtained with congressional help. I’d have to check to be sure, but I think some of the private aircraft carrier museum’s have them. So it could well be possible if an acceptable museum put in a request.

It wouldn’t hurt to have one of your established museums ask. After all, George does owe Tony a favor or two. And according to a couple of other threads I’ve been reading, we Colonials owe a fair amount of penance for some of Hollywood’s excesses (sorry Chaps)!

Good luck. I hope you get one or more. A better fate than the scrapper. If you ever read the WIX board, you may find the NHC is the biggest obstacle.

You could write to George and ask him.

Stranger things have happened.
