Harald Penrose.

Hi all
I’ve just started on what might be my biggest reading challenge yet.
I’ve started volume one (The Pioneer Years) of Harald Penrose’s massive history of British aviation in five volumes.
My plan is to work through all five volumes by the end of the year.
Has anyone here attempted this previously and if they did, how did they find it?
My initial impression is that Mr Penrose might be a bit nationalistic, after all he came from an era when that attitude was quite commonplace, but as usual I could be wrong.

Along the way I might drop an odd line here about what I’ve found.

I’ve also been dipping into the 100 years of flight series published by Putnams in more recent times and it’ll be interesting to compare the two.
Sadly I think with the way the Putnams brand has ‘been on the ropes’ in recent years and the way the 100 years of flight series was instantly remaindered it’ll be unlikely that the whole set will ever be published—very sad.
Get them at twelve quid a volume while you can.
Cheers
Andy

Thanks, shame they didn’t continue with the series. Will have to watch out for the Putnam ones.

I only have the two penrose volumes covering the 30’s and find them a excellent read. Have been looking for the rest but not seen any more at resonable prices. Were these the last two volumes published? If so why? Would love to have 1945-50 volume.

Rob
The two volumes published by HMSO are the last two of the five. I think it finishes in 1939.

The first three were published by Putnams are much harder to find. Strangely I’ve the first three but not the two by HMSO! I’ll be on Abe-Books before too much longer.
Cheers
