Coming to England….where should I go?

I’m gonna have about twenty hours off at Mildenhall AB in England on Saturday. Which should I go to? The Imperial War Museum in London? Or out to Duxford?

I’ll probably only have time to do one or the other and I’ve done both before. Which should I choose? Any other suggestions?

Bird in Hand

Been in that Pub meeting a friend who flew KC 135’s – the food was pretty bad then , sounds like the beer was bit rough too . Glad you had a safe trip .As I was saying earlier you could and should check out the 100th BG Museum at Thorpe Abbotts on your next trip

Well my trip to England came and went. No involvement with airplanes at all. Except for my five year old C-17 and a pretty important helicopter I dropped off over in Europe. We landed at Mildenhall around 1600 on Saturday, were firmly planted at the “Bird in Hand” right outside the gate around 1700. Played darts and drank until……exactly 12 hours before take off time….. Some Air Force security police were kind enough to give me a ride back to the barracks. My young loadmaster got a ride back on base a little later with some other nice folks. They actually dropped him off a few hundred yards from the barracks because he got sick and left quite a bit of “Strongbow” and “Speckeled Hen” in their childs car seat. You would think they would be happy that he didn’t throw up on their Volvo’s leather seats! Anyhow; we left as soon as quite hours ended this morning and 9.2hrs later, I’m sitting back in South Carolina.

Maybe the next trip will allow more time so I can get out to see the old planes.

That’s a real shame Brad, still as you say maybe next time.

I wonder if Steve will give Haydn some dual on the JP at Hendon, if he isn’t too busy fondling aircraft!

Well it looks like my plans have been screwed up. We are now landing late on Saturday and leaving early on Sunday. Sorry but it looks like the fun ends before it starts. Maybe next time!

I’ve visited the UK in 2000 and then I visited 3 museums:

Day 1: Hendon
Day 2: Shuttleworth
Day 3: Duxford

I got an overdose at that time because I’m not used to see so much historical planes in such a short period. But those 3 museums are a must and you can spend more than one day in each of them!

MexicanBob – there will be a couple of other forum members at Hendon on Saturday; me and Seafuryfan are taking our respective young lads there for a ‘lads and dads’ day out.

Getting there by public transport might take a while; your best bet for getting there would be to get a lift into Cambridge, train to London Kings Cross, and then Northern Line tube to Colindale.

I’m driving down to Hendon from the Cambridge area, but already have two kids on board so only really have one space available. I’m planning on leaving Cambridgeshire about 1030-1100, and arriving back about 1800; if that’s any use to you either going to Hendon or coming back, let me know. Will pm a mobile number to you.

Firebird…most of it has been squeezed into the other hangers…although Concorde and the Vulcan are outside…think the Comet might be out there too, but would have to check…

Mexicanbob…parts of Duxford are somewhat cramped at the moment due to work commencing on the AirSpace project. The Superhanger, soon to become “AirSpace”, is currently looking very spare, as most of the side panels have been removed, and basically at the moment it is just a iron cage!

But is also means getting to see all the stuff that was in there which is now sitting outside, so on that basis it may be worth the journey to Duxford for this very reason……. 😉

I would go for Hendon or Shuttleworth if you can get there – nice variety of aircraft at both, although the food is better at Shuttleworth and you don’t require a whopping great torch to see half the exhibits. IWM London is good, but if you want a real aircraft fix, I’d go to Hendon or Shuttleworth 🙂

MB,

I could probably meet you at Hendon, if you decide to go there. Just let me know roughly what time you’ll be there – when you know. We can either arrange to meet somewhere at the museum, or I can PM you my mobile number. BTW we are talking about this Saturday (19th)?

I forgot all about the RAF museum. I haven’t been there in several years. I’ve been to Duxford several times, but I’ve never been in the American Air Museum. It was closed the last couple of times I was there.

I’d love to see the Shuttleworth Collection. I’ve never had that opportunity.

All of this depends on what time we acutally make it to Mildenhall. I’m sure rest of the crew will want to go into London as usual. If I go with them, then I’ll definately do the RAF Museum.

I’ve also got some friends from the BAES that I’d like to try to visit with.

Too many choices, not enough time……the story of my life.

Thanks for yalls help!

Thought about The Shuttleworth Collection?
Robbo and I will be there Saturday.
Cheers
Andy

Good enough reason to drive on by, he’d only bore you with tales about dusting various old aircraft, and the few hundred photographs that he carry’s everywhere with him, 😀
