The 'Dump' at West Freugh

Does anyone have any pictures of the aircraft on the dump at West Freugh? Does anyone know if they are still there as I thought I’d read that they were scrapped but now can’t find the article? Any info would be appreciated.

Many thanks for the photo, Luce Bay is on the map but West Freugh is not!?. I assume it’s the area between the A75 and the sea?

Intersting that on the scrapyard threads everyone seems surprised how ‘historic’ aircraft should be destroyed in this manner and yet a prototype Phantom is left to rot with no one showing much interest? Maybe it was this level of indifference that led to the Scimitar on the same dump 20 years ago being scrapped? Would post a photo of the Scimitar but !!

I started this thread a while back – it’s my picture that I took in 1998 whilst flying there. I have other of the airfield but only this one of the dump. Feel free to use it. West Freugh was also known as Luce Bay.

Alistair,

Many thanks again for the info, pity about the Argosy and what a way for the prototype Phantom FGR2 to end it’s days! Would love to see the photo’s if your able to post them on the forum? Do you have any contact details for West Freugh? (could you send me a PM if you do?)

Martin

My Email addy is ageorge@haemonetics.com , I don’t have a scanner – but I will look out the addressess for you , there are farmers who lease land from the MOD – these are good starters as with a good set of binos you can see a fair bit of the place . Other bits are no-go on red flag days but are sometimes accessible , where do you live , if you are prepared to carry the Thermos’s then there may be a possibility of coming shooting with us ??

Many thanks for the info, don’t suppose you have any photo’s of the Argosy? W&R 18 lists a Phantom as being there too, do you know if it still exists? Many thanks.

I have a few photos , taken with a £3 disposable , the Argosy is engineless and looks like she has been run over with a bulldozer . I THINK there is a Phantom there , the wings are stacked against one side of it , these are down in the South West corner , further north and off to the left you can see some targets , this is where the Lightning / Hunter parts were lying around . Nothing looked remotely salvagable . Some of the tank hulls have been obliterated by what must be a very impressive piece of kit – whatever it is .
Write and ask if you can walk through – I have been chauffuered around in an MOD Landy before and they all seem like decent chaps .

I’ve shot geese down there for a couple of years , only thing I can see is a very sorry looking Argosy , further up in the ranges there are two or three lumps which look like they were Lightnings a few years ago and a Hunter appeared about 2-3 years ago. Plenty other military scrap lying about though .
