Photo Id help please

HM Submarines M1, M2 & M3 were developments of the steam powered K-Class.

M1 had a 12-inch gun, M2 a seaplane & hangar & M3 was a minelayer.

The attached shows the Parnall Peoto recce aircraft on HMS M2.

After being hauled out of the hangar, the wings were unfolded and the aircraft was launched from the catapult.

After landing on its floats, it came alongside and was winched aboard.

The whole concept was not a success.

The 4,304 ton French submarine Surcouf had aBesson MB 411 recc seaplane – as did a number of Japanese subs – including the massive 6,560 ton I-400, equipped with 3 x Aichi M6A1 Seiran seaplanes, designed to attack the US west coast

If you do a search on ‘Google’ for Parnall Peto you should find a few more interesting photos. I just have.

If you come across any photos of the Hawker Hart family of biplanes I would be interested.

Does anyone have any more photos of this type of aircraft its rather nice looking.

I’ve only found this photo so far in the boxs.

Also what are the box like items on the underside of the leading edge.

Alex – the submarine was called M2; it was one of the three M class.
Papa – there were three: as you say one was rebuilt with a different serial number after a major crash, but it apparently contained only slightly more than the data plate rebuilds of today hence the new number. – Nermal

N181 was built in 1925. Powered by 127 hp Bristol Lucifer and later a 135 hp AS Mongoose engine. After rebuilding as N225, it was aboard submarine M2 when it sank with all hands on 26 January 1932. I believe there were only 2 built, the second being serailled N182, with an enlarged fin and rudder.

It’s a Parnall Peto. This was a submarine launched two seat reconnaissance aircraft. It was designed for the M2 series of submarines.
