Thanks Ian, I will have a look at the jobs.
Dave T, yes I had a Chipmunk. I passed it to the APSS who have purchased wings so in due course it will be a complete aircraft.

There are vacancies for another four Visitor Servicces staff at the Mueum of Flight, Robert. Details from the NMS website, but the closing date for applications is 4 February.
I know what you mean about the costs of travelling to and from the site – I have an 80 mile round trip every day. Not as bad as the folk who commute to London from York, but still a fair old haul.

…coming up towards me was a FW190 (a WAR replica)
Crikey, didn’t know any of these WAR planes were still about !
Robert, are you the guy with the Chipmunk project ?
By: Robert Whitton - 25th January 2005 at 22:55
Yes a Microlight is a plane. It even enables me to fly in the vicinity of the East Fortune Museum each time I attempt to land!. One I was making my way back to the airfield when I noticed coming up towards me was a FW190 (a WAR replica) but he waggled his wings, (and so did I – with fright) so I suppose he had seen me!!

Final salary pension on offer – sod the salary, they are rare as hens teeth these days.
A microlight is a plane? Next time I’ve some woodworking to do I’ll remember that. I always thought it was a fun kind of aircraft 🙂 Live and learn heh?

The salary is quite good if you are local, but travel costs can really bite into it. The housing market around Haddington is not great. I was speaking to a new policeperson in East Lothian and they are finding it difficult to find a place to rent near Haddington. I agree that perhaps an ex service person with a pension looking to do usefull work and get a reasonable wage is the sort of person. I had a look at the advert as I am redundant but I dont have the experience or the skills required. Indeed I didnt even get an interview for the “Visitor Services Assistant” position that was advertised last march. The hourly rate was about £5.00 with weekend rostering and only part time in the winter.( Somewhat less than I was earning before!!) Travel would have cost me about £8 a day so it would not have been for the money.

Ian is spot on with his comment about the public sector, its exactly the same in our museum here ‘down south’
By: RadarArchive - 25th January 2005 at 20:49
Remember that the public sector tends to pay less than comparable jobs in the private sector. This salary isn’t too bad IMHO.

Eek… 😮 …and there was I thinking it wasn’t that bad a wage…more than I’m getting and you get to play with the aircraft!
Anne
It’s not a bad wage for someone who has experience and is getting on in years – an ex-serviceman perhaps ? . But I honestly think that someone taking on that level of responsiblity should be on a bit more of a salary than that .

Anne,
I think what Alastair was meaning that, for the qualifications and experience required, it’s not a huge amount of money. Compare with here: http://www.rafcareers.com/jobs/job_files/jobfile_engineerofficer.cfm You can see that the bottom end of the RAF scale is more-or-less the same as the top end of our scale. However, working for the National Museums isn’t about the money, or at least it shouldn’t be. The salary should be plenty for a high standard of living (in this part of the country at any rate) and what is needed is enthusiasm and a love of the historic airframes themselves. If you’re just applying for the money – I would suggest: don’t apply!

I don’t know may people who would work for that salary – probably suit a retired service engineer . .

Added to that, you’d have to put up with me. Not a very attractive recruitment package.

I would work for that salary. Unfortunately I don’t have the relevant qualifications, only my undying enthusiasim.

I would love to as I live only a mile away from East Fortune BUT,
1. I am too old
2. I have recently retired
3. I have a Harrier of my own which is taking up most of my time!
Super job for someone though.
Ian.
