A REALLY crummy scan from a negative (apologies) of a shot from Peterson AFB in 1992 when 3 P-38’s came together for the P-38 association national gathering and an unveiling of a bronze statue by Robert Henderson of a P-38 at the Air Force academy…the P-38’s are Lefty Gardner’s, General William Lyons, and the CAF’s ‘droop snoot’ P-38 ‘Scatterbrain Kid’…consider, that since this was shot, all 3 P-38’s have crashed….Lyons suffered a gear up landing in AZ on a return trip to California from this show, the CAF’s suffered a fuel starvation crash landing at Breckenridge the next year….and we all know what happened to Lefty’s just a few years ago. Happy note: All crew in all the crashes survived and were’nt even harmed.

To the best of my knowledge there isn’t any other 38 around currently flying. ๐

Jack Erickson’s NL2114L 44-27083 olive drab “Tangerine” is still flown occasionally. When I was visiting the Tillamook Air Museum in Nov 2002, they were planning a photo flight with the P-38, P-47 and P-51 as the targets and the SBD Dauntless as the photo ship.

When was the last time….
Well, there was a tread here by Mark12 with pohotos from Transpo 72 in DC some time ago. Here it is; http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=31434
So at Transpo there was three. ๐ N345 with CAF/Levitz, N38LL with the CAF, and N9005R with Bill Ross. There is a couple of photos in Kevin Granthams P-38 book “P-Screamers” of N25Y, N345, and N38LL flying together for a photo shoot by the CAF in the 70s. Either Transpo or this would surely be the last time for a trio. Two, N3JB and N38DH flew together for an episode of “Black Sheep” starring several Corsairs (and William Conrad in a lesser role). ๐ I saw N38BP and N3145 fly together during the latters test programme, and hasn’t GG flown together with “Porky”? But three, no, must have been way back. ๐ I guess that should be an indicator that it is about time to do it! The question is, which three 38s would that be? Most likely the Planes of Fame, Glacier Girl, and Ron Fagen’s (if that one is not being restored). To the best of my knowledge there isn’t any other 38 around currently flying. ๐

Best I ever saw was two P-38s in the air together – but they were racing at the time. This is N25Y Race #13 flown by Lefty Gardner and N345 Race #38 flown by the late Gary Levitz at Reno in 1980. The sound alone was memorable.

OK, which P-38 is painted up as Tony LeVier’s “Snafuperman”?
By: crazymainer - 14th January 2005 at 02:52
Hi All,
Don’t think the P-38 is going to be going anywhere soon if the CAF doesn’t change their veiws on the Twin Mustang they are going to lose more then the Twin Mustang.
The Twin Mustang is on a Counditional Loan from the US Air Force along with there B-29 and three other aircraft.

The ex General Lyons P-38 [44-26981, N5596V] was repaired by the Santa Monica Museum of Flying and is flyable today….though tied up in legal difficulties.
Thanks for sharing the picture, Mark. It’s great to see three of them in the air together.

What’s the latest on the ex-Lyons P-38?
The last I heard, it was going to be traded to the CAF for the F-82, then the deal was put on hold due to the USAF Museum claiming ownership of the F-82.
Was this ever resolved?
To my knowledge, no. The P-38 is on display at the CAF Southern California Wing’s hangars at Camarillo, California. Ownership/title is still murky.

Thanks for posting the pictures, very enjoyable!
I’m pretty sure 3 sat next to each other at the Planes of Fame air show this past year, 2 fly together in Kentucky this past September.
I hope some time soon someone tries to gather them up for an air show. That would be a sight!

A scan from a PRINT of that same event….I don’t like the capabilities of the negative scanner I have….so always go to the print, I reckon….anyway, a much more legible shot…
Have’nt heard on the ex-Lyons -P-38…and am also curious whether or not it’s true Lefty’s old bird is going to Europe…?

Its better than not seeing it at all ๐
What an elegant sight that is ๐ Damn sad about the crashes though, any chance of them being airworthy again?
Thanks ๐
