Spitfire to fly this year in NZ?

I was just reading here that the Spitfire owned by James Slade and being restored at Dairy Flat, Auckland by the Subritskys should fly this year. I was wondering if anyone knows how far away from flight the other Spitfire restorations in New Zealand are? Especially Sir Tim Wallis’s ex-Mk XIV, and the Subritzky’s own Spitfire Mk XVI?

Will we possibly see a few in the air here soon?

…and PS

It did get repainted in Brown/Green, as the Hurricane 🙁 , prior to the hand over ceremony to the USA at RAF Odiham on 2 July 1958

Thanks Mark, stunning photo.

Who owned it then? And what are the colours? The ‘grey’ looks very light compared with the Hurricane.

Cheers
Dave

The movement card says post ‘Royal Tournament’ in 1957, the aircraft was Station Flight Biggin Hill in March 1958, followed instantly by Station Flight North Weald. Then to the USAF memorial July 1958.

This shot was most probably taken at the Press Call prior to sending it to the USA. Many photos exist including colour. Who Knows the photos could have been taken from the Eagle Lancaster/Lincoln.

At this time the RAF had got three low back Mk XVI’s back in the Air, SL574, TE476 & TE330. All seem to have been painted in the non standard ‘pseudo’ paint job to represent late WWII aircraft.

The ‘Crown’ colour shots show it in pale grey and a dark murky green but there might be some processing effect here.

The Hurricane, old LF363, is in Brown/Green but with the wrong C.1 Roundels. That is how it was then and accounts in part for why various Spitfires in the USA/Canada during the 1960’s perpetuated the scheme with its faults.

Beautiful photo.

I’d hesitate to say that it might have been part of the North Weald Station Flight around the time of the picture??

TE330

DaveH,

By a coincidence this splendid photograph arrived in the post, half an hour ago – via that ‘Well known internet market site’.

It is an original but not credited nor printed on AM paper.

Taken in 1957/8.

With thanks and apologies to an unknown photographer.

Ah, that’s right. I was getting confused there. Personally I think a Hind flight (or two?)will be much more exciting, yey!

Dave

AFAIK the Subritsky / Slade Spit is one and the same , Slade sold it to them . Work has stopped to concentrate on the Hinds.

Dave,

I would suggest that the James Slade aircraft and the Subritsky XVI are one and the same aircraft namely TE330.
