Spitfire N3287

I just came across this interesting model here

The colour looks like RAF Training Yellow – which is odd – so I looked the serial up on Google I discovered one site saying it was a Spitfire MkIII, as indicated by the model’s url. But another site says N3287 was a Spitfire I of 92 Sqn that crashed on 28th of July 1940 – see here

What is the story with this Spit? Was it a Mk I, a Mk III, both? Why is it yellow? Was this a prototype colour?

Very interesting – imagine a yellow Spit on the warbird circuit today.

They were VIII’s and it wasn’t a wind up.

At Gorrie which is NT I think.

I just found that thread and concede I made an error – it was three Mk VIII’s, not eight Mk III’s as I’d thought. Sorry Mark. 🙂

Well, as far as I can tell, there was ONLY the one MkIII (N3297), BUT, according to Spitfire – The History, there was another (whose serial I cannot recall).

I think the other Mk111 was W3237.

Well, as far as I can tell, there was ONLY the one MkIII (N3297), BUT, according to Spitfire – The History, there was another (whose serial I cannot recall).

The Mk. III was a non-starter, only one built. I’m sure Mark12 was talking about the Mk. VIII

I always thought the serial number for the sole MkIII Spit built was N3297.

There’s a couple of colour profiles of the aircraft in “Spitfire – The History”, one showing it yellow with black/white undersides, and another showing it camouflaged above, with I think yellow undersides.
