I have copied, at risk to life a limb, a letter from The Sentinel, which I think is published by the Northcliffe Newspapers Group Ltd.
Critisism is futile. It is written by a 10 year old. It’s just cute.
We should name a town after our spitfire inventor
27 December 2004
(C) The Sentinel, 2004.
Reginald Mitchell invented a brilliant plane called the Spitfire. We couldn’t have won the Second World War without his design of the plane. He was fantastic. He should be honoured because we wouldn’t be here too if it wasn’t for the Spitfire. Reginald Mitchell was a brilliant aircraft designer. The Spitfire was a winner, there is no question about it. The Spitfire was powerful, strong and fast. I don’t know how he did it. I am so sad that he died before the plane went into battle. I am so glad that he joined the RAF and invented the plane. I think he should have more than a statue outside The Potteries Museum, in Hanley. I think there should be a town named after him. He was a famous man and he was kind. I am so sad that he died. I wish that he was still alive today so I could write a letter to him saying how good he was and how proud of him I am for inventing the best fighting plane that I have heard of.

Ok so I totally forgot to send the stamps.. If Snapper would like to make himself known to me at one of the forthcoming airshows that (hopefully) I’ll be attending and demand a quid I shall be more than happy to cough up!

I am delighted to report that yesterday I received a note from Gordon Mitchell, with a copy of the letter that he has just written to Dean, thanking him for the – “very fine letter about my father”.
Something that I am sure Dean will treasure forever.
Mark
Too cool – well done.

Well there is a further little surprise in the pipe line…more later. Mark

Going of track abit here.
What a great story this thread as turned out to be for that little boy and the whole class. A free trip to duxford for the class would be a good gift and get the young lad in a spit cockpit.
Lets show the modern day teaching in schools that this type of thing is both rewarding and very educational. And must be encouraged in some ways as this is the main aim of all the aviation museums at the end of the day. Its to be educational for future generations this could set a trend for other schools

SOMETIMES, kids, it can work to advantage! If a bunch of folks hear about something like this through….oh, I dunno…say an AVIATION FORUM, they tend to rally and say “We don’t need this outsider’s help, we can do this ourselves!” and everyone flocks to support it….such may be the case here!
we’ll see…

I’m not critisising the American, please don’t think that.I was critisising the fact that our own country is’nt interested and it is taking an American to take the intiative.
Isn’t it funny that in America this guy might be criticised for the (apparent) lack of interest in his own country’s heritage? Or, what would you say about a British millionaire who wanted to spend a lot of money to commemorate a French designer, for example?

I think the fact that the man was (probably) born over 3000′ miles away and (probably) speaks with an accent is totally and utterly irrelevant. Thank heavens he cares about this country’s heritage.
Some Americans may only care for their own, but this man is branching out. He is to be commended.

🙂 Is’nt it sad to think it may take an American and a football club to get something moving 🙁

Money, moolah, smackeroonies. That’s what it takes these days, and football seems have more than it’s fair share.
From the interview i heard,Port Vale are not a rich club and need the money ,they suggested or are going to suggest to the American that the Stand could be renamed [or built and named,i don’t follow Port Vale] to commemorate R J Mitchell.Apparently RJ Mitchell was born within 2 miles of the ground so may have been a supporter.
It was only a suggestion at this time,i suppose if it helps one of the poorer clubs and gets people thinking about R J Mitchell and the Spitfire it may not be too bad, rather that than McCrap type of commercialism.
I know R J Mitchell designed the Spitfire but has any credit been given to Joe Smith for taking over the designs and developement of the Spitfire throughout the war years.

🙂 On Radio 5 last night they interviewed the director of Port Vale football club.
A rich American also wants to commemorate RJ Mitchell and Port Vale FC are going to ask him if he would fund the renaming of the stand at Port Vale football club to be a tribute to R J Mitchell.

Good too see the Hanley spitfire get a mention
I’m a student in the area, and have to note most people dont seem to know its there-Yet when they find out its considered an interesting thing to see.
Its well worth going to the museum to check it out if you’re in the local area.
I believe RJ Mitchell is a famous son of stoke, and is quite a celebrated figure round here, with the spit and the statue at the museums, the road and the pub named after him.
Unfortunately the pub in question is owned by J D Wetherspoons who have “modernised” many good aviation pubs like the White Hart in Hornchurch, essex.
But yeah check the potteries museum well worth a visit. Extensive pottery collection as well. Free to get in as well i think.
Love Jay

Absolutely, I hope something can be arranged.

Each pupil in Dean’s year six class wrote a letter to The Sentinel after learning about Reginald Mitchell in history lessons.
It would be interesting to see the other letters. I think the teacher is to be highly commended too.
