No. 280 Maintenance Unit. RAF, Earsham

Hi Everybody,
a first post, having read and enjoyed the posts and the excellent photography over the last few months.
I have just been looking through some old papers of my grandfathers which have been in my possession since his death over 20 years ago. Amongst these is a letter dated May 1949 ordering him to report to No 280 Maintenance Unit. RAF, Earsham, Nr Bungay. At the time he was either in or joining the Air Ministry Constabulary.
I can’t find any information about 280 MU – can anybody help.
Thanks in advance
SimonW

Apologies for going slightly off-topic, but if you are visiting the museum at Bungay (As you should) after eating one of the fabulous burgers at the pub outside the gate, do then take the time to pop into the Earsham Otter Sanctuary just down the road. They are working hard to re-establish the otters in E Anglian rivers, and a visit there does fill in an enjoyable couple of hours. Open Easter to October from memory.

280 MU

Thanks for the replies and information – the Explosives Depot certainly makes sense as the area between Earsham and Hedenham is criss crossed by the ‘concrete roads’ which were supposedly part of a WW11 bomb dump for Flixton and I believe other 8th AAF airfields locally. I wasn’t aware of any post war activity there and local memories seem only relate to the war time bomb dump.
Any other info will be gratefully received
Simon

Hmm. Didn’t know anything about it, but I did meet a guy at Hardwick once who remembers cutting up Lancs or something nearby – I wonder if Yak11Fan ever heard that? I think he knows the chaps son from memory (this was a few years back).

Hello Simon,

Just the first thought that occurs, but I assume you’ve contacted the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum, based in Bungay itself (as I’m sure you know)? I would think if anywhere has details it would be there.

Best,

Jonathan
