Has anyone in the forum (Daz for example? :)) any idea of the quality of the above mentioned 1:18 model (25 inch wingspan) which is available on the web for around £49.99, including the RAF Museum in the markings of 610 (County of Chester) squadron and 118 squadron. My local model shop – part of the ToyMaster franchise – won’t touch anything to do with 21st Century Toys as they said they had a bad experience with an earlier model, but won’t elaborate. I had placed a web order with Antics at Stonehouse, Glos, but they then sent me an e-mail stating “we unfortunately do not have this item in stock at the present time.” which is really strange as the site states “Updated daily, these are models where we have recently received fresh stock.” The site URL is http://www.aircraftmodels.co.uk/1224_1_1431210.html in case anyone else wants to take a look. Also, if anyone knows where it is obtainable cheaper please let me know, I have already seen a museum in Scotland advertising it for £35.00, but no mention of postage costs 🙂 – cheers – Allan 🙂

Hi Guys – thanks for the additional comments – seems from the piece by gbwez1 “got mine for $44.99 from Wal-Mart” and they want about £49.99 over in the UK that we are still in rip-off land 🙂 Geoff – thanks for the piece about £41, inc postage – I will check it out. Though how Santa will bring it down the chimney with a 25″ wingspan I have no idea 🙂 – cheers – Allan 🙂

Geoff, yep, I realise that not everyone is into making kitsets and the skill levels vary too. I was perhaps hasty in my criticism. I am just an average modeller myself and many friends who are more hardcore into it humble my efforts.
But I was quite shocked at the prices of these, bearing in mind I was looking at the wholesale prices. Most are just 1/72nd scale, not big. I’m not a big fan of that small scale, I like to see detail and accuracy, and it’s hard enough to replicate in kitset form at that smaller scale, so I am dubious that they are any better in die cast.
They are very nice pieces to collect I guess, and I would have considered buying the RNZAF P40E if it had been in the correct scheme, and also the fact it was in some ‘Aces’ range but it was in the scheme of an aircraft that never left NZ puzzled me. I hope the research is better on the other models, put it this way.

Dave,
I have two die-cast Corgi aircraft, the He111 in BoB day colours and the Ju87, also in BoB colours.
I’ve always been hopeless at plastic model kits, no skill, or patience, so without Corgi I wouldn’t be able to have these two wonderful aircraft to look at.
At the end of the day, I’m happy with the aircraft, and what I paid for them, which is what matters.
If only they’d bring out a Dornier 17Z & a Ju88A…

I stopped after the debacle with the 1/32 Spit Mk1 – that prop falling off, and all those loose access panels on the wings….
Think twice before sitting it on top of the TV, that’s all I’m saying!

I bought the Corsair at the Corsair gathering, great replica that sits on my table (in British markings, ‘TA’), wanna get a VF-17 or VMF 214 Corsair…and if I can find the room, maybe some of the others…i love the things!

Last week I had a look through the Corgi die-cast aircraft catalogue that Dad got through his model business.
They are an astoundingingly high price, I don’t know why people pay it (even in Britain). After all they are mass produced and machine made (no doubt in China), as opposed to creating a one-off yourself with a kitset for less money and more detail in most cases.
Having said that for die cast toys they are better than most, and I was impressed with their wide range, surprisingly including two RNZAF aircraft (a 487 (NZ) Sqn Mossie and a P40E). However, the P40E is in the wrong colours!! They have used sand brown instead of dark earth – poor research. 😡

That’s the one I saw, Geoff. If I had the room….

Try this website, cost inc P&P is £41 https://ssl.iomart.com/jacksonsmodels.co.uk/acatalog/Corgi_Classic_Warbirds.html
And Just a few photos of some of the range.
Must admit I’m very tempted by the 109E & the Stuka (BoB), the P-40 looks nice too.

It is outstanding value – got mine for $44.99 from Wal-Mart . I have one mounted on the wall in my living room as a kind of 3-D painting. Have bought several of the 21st Century series in the last few years – Stuka, P-47, FW-190. Can’t beat them for the price at that scale. They are essentially built as kids toys so don’t expect champonship winning quality, but for the price you can’t beat them. I’ve had the Stuka in my office for 3 years and lost count of the number of compliments I’ve had on it, and amazement when I share the price I paid for it.
I wonder if Canadian Wal-Marts have it?

It looked OK to me, from a glance. Mind you, that might mean it looks like kack from close-up, or it might not! Paint scheme looked spot on, though.
The Messerschmitt 109 that I saw was in Galland’s markings, but it had a Charles Church/G-HUNN-style aerial mast!

Hi Guys – thanks for your comments, much appreciated. Unfortunately down here in deepest Cornwall I don’t think we have toy fairs. 🙂 Daz – it is the same model, which is supposed to be virtually complete when you buy it, as they are selling two versions (610 and 118). What did you think of the quality – or could you take a second look ? 🙂 – cheers – Allan 🙂

I did see one recently in a model shop up the road – about the same size, but different markings (118 Squadron – NK-K). Is this a one-piece job? The one I saw had its wings off in a box.
It also had a pilot on a stand. It was a great deal less than the Corgi Spit Mk1, and quite a bit bigger!

Not seen one myself, but apparently they’re plastic and the word ‘toy’ in the manufacturers title is quite descriptive.. you need to have a look at one in the flesh and make your own mind up before spending that sort of dosh.. keep an eye out for toy fairs in your neck of the woods..
