Vickers Wellingtons in North Africa

Two of the men who are part of my Cambridge Air Force project flew Wellington bombers in North Africa. They are:

Bob Stowers

and

Ross Sayers

This got me thinking – what sort of colour scheme did the Wellingtons wear in the desert? Were they in standard Bomber Command dark gree/dark earth/black? Or did they wear the Meditteranean scheme of desert sand upper and azure blue lower? Or was there a different scheme for Bomber Command mediums in North Africa?

The majority of the photographs I’ve seen show just the regular Bomber Command camouflage. They were mostly used on night operations, although Halifaxes (couldn’t resist) were also used for strafing missions at low altitude in the desert during daylight. Could have been quite a sight. 😀

Achtung, Halifax!!!!! 😮 😮
