19 squadron, Duxford
Spitfire P7423, Sub-Lt(A) A.G. Blake killed, believed ‘picked-off’ by Bf109 whilst acting as ‘weaver’ during squadron patrol over south London, crashed and burned out at ‘Oakhurst’, 216 London Rd, Chelmsford, 17.15 hrs.
46 squadron, Stapleford
Hurricane s/n u/k, Sgt H.E. Black killed (died 9/11/40), shot down in combat with Bf109s and believed crashed in Hothfield Park near Ashford.
213 squadron, Tangmere
Hurricane V7622, P/O R.R. Hutley killed, abandoned aircraft during squadron patrol, reason unknown, 14.45 hrs.
‘Fighter Command Losses’ gives P2720 as Hutley’s mount, and states that he ‘baled out off Selsey after combat at 14.45, picked up but died.’
257 squadron, North Weald
Hurricane V6852, Sgt A.G. Girdwood killed, caught taking-off during low-level bombing attack on base by Bf109s of LG2, crashed and burned out 16.40 hrs.
310 squadron, Duxford
Hurricane P3889, P/O E Fechtner killed, crashed near base after mid-air collision whilst formating during wing patrol, 15.10 hrs.
