Spitfire tailwheel collapse-minimal damage

A General Aviation forum describes an incident today at North Weald, involving a single-seat Spitfire in ‘grey air-attack’ colours. It flew a number of circuits, before requesting visual confirmation that the tail-wheel was down and locked. This appeared to be the case, but on touchdown, the tailwheel collapsed.

Visible damage was limited to the u/c doors ‘ground-down a bit’ and slight damage to the base of the rudder, which is bent and scraped.

Hopefully it will be back in the air before long.

Things dont appear to be too bad but it will still need to be checked properly.

Is that a post about the Spitfire or the forum members?

Great shame, glad the pilot was OK.. I’m sure knowing the owner he will be keen to get the aircraft back in the air for all our enjoyment very soon.

Hope she be ok by next year glad damage does not sound too bad.
I must admit i like the clean look of a Mk11 or Mk8 with the tailwheel retracted.

That problem seems a bit strange because, in recent times, PL965 has been flown with the tail wheel locked down and the rear doors closed – was it recently changed back to operational(ish)

OK, so bets are on for when it gets re-locked!

That’s a shame… I hope Pram Man is able to get her sorted out and flying again soon!
