Squadron "hacks"

I was thinking about the two-seat Spitfire Vc that was a local mod for one of the desert-based units (forget which one), and was wondering what other squadrons (RAF or otherwise) used as “hacks”.

As always, pics welcomed! 😀

A certain Messerschmitt 109 G-2 (Black 6 ring a bell?) was used as a hack by Bobby Gibbes ‘s quadron and there was also a captured SM-79 Sparviero that was used as a transport by a British squadron.

I know about a couple of Texan’s that served with the 8th AF.

AT-6A – 43-13048 used by the 353rd FG at Raydon

AT-6D – 42-85066 used by 7th PG at Mount Farm

I’m sure that there were many more though!

41 Squadron in 43 had a “hack” Spitfire Vb while it was flying XIIs. It was AA718 EB-L.

It was used for local orientation flights etc. It apparently survived the war and ended up with the French AF postwar

The 350th FG USAAF in the MTO had locally modified 2 seat Hurri IIs for each of the three squadrons. The 347th of the 350th had a 109G for a while too.

601 Squadron had a JU87 painted with roundels wide yellow stripes and the flying sword.
78th FG I think had a two seater P-51B painted red/orange with the black & white Checkered nose

I think the 389th Bomb Group at Hethel had a P-47 for a while. I think you used it to help form formations–like a cowboy riding herd.

Hi,

80 Sqn, RAF had two Bf109s that were painted up in their markings in February 1943. One crashed during a test flight.

The 20th. Fighter Group had (at some point during the war) two different B-17s, an A-20, two different P-47s, A Proctor, a Miles Magister, An Oxford Airspeed, a Beechcraft Staggerwing, A Norseman, a P-38 (long after they had converted over to the P-51), a Cessna Bobcat, a Vultee Vengeance, a field converted 2-seater P-51, a C-47 and a couple of others.

One of the B-17s, RB-17E #41-2578 (LC-Z) “Big Tin Bird” was a war weary vet with an amazing history, it had flown on with the 457thBG on the 8th’s first mission to Rouen, France — August 17th, 1944. It had entered service on 03-Mar-44 and was finally salvaged on 06-Aug-45.
