I have a couple of questions regarding the Stearman. Does anyone have any wartime cockpit photographs of the Stearman? Did the cockpits vary between models? Would anybody know the correct paint finish for the instrument panels (matt black, satin black, crackle finish etc…)?
Many Thanks

Two Stearman books by Martin Bowman have pics of wartime examples.
Alternatively you could contact The Arnold Scheme at Leigh on Sea, they have a number of members who did their primary training on Stearmans in the US and Canada from 1942 onwards, they are always happy to talk about their experiences… They have my utmost respect!

I took this picture of Paul Bennets Stearman “822” at Boxted in 2003. I don’t know if this will help you?

Lovely pics crazymainer, outstanding aircraft.
Yak11 fan.
My aircraft is a 1943 N2-S5, it has the original engine and prop and the rest of the aircraft is all original, no damage history so all of its components, wings etc are the ones it came out of the factory at Witchita with. I have all the logs/history from day one, it has had very few owners, including one for 30 years. It has been recovered once in 1974 (with irish linen) and its due to be done again this winter. You are more than welcome to look around it, it has a more ‘lived in’ feel (!) than the excellent pics show above.

Yak11,
The standard color was Matt black I’ll try to dig up a color chart I have, The Air Corp was Matt Black and I think the US Navy was Standard Black not sure what that is called now adays tho.

Not wartime piccies admitidly, but I cant see someone lavishing the time and dosh to restore one of these babes only to take it to the largest aviation gathering in the World in the wrong colours….’corse, I might be wrong !.
Dont know if the attached are of any use and second guessing maybe some of your next Stearman questions, hence the external shots (and cos some of ’em where too big to upload, they probably wont be in order iether)
