Setter off to Vietnam- bet you want to know why!

Hi all

Just got time to put the bags down and the tea jug on and the phone rang – I am off to Vietnam in search of projects – particularly Skyraiders and to chase down the fate of the 4 Bearcats I saw in 1972 as well as lots of more recent stuff – anybody got any other leads ? I will be there from 10 Nov for ten days then back to Manila to the next phase of the recoveries started in July.

I would like to at least get to do my washing but I’m not whinging .

Regards
John P

Now the Real reason

OK AVM Parker,

The Real Reason you are going to Nam is to try to find that Package you sent to me before you left to go to Jolly Good Old England. :p :diablo:

Oh yea their was something about Bearcats and Japaness Aircraft that you and I talk about alos but it just seems that I can’t remember what it was funny that way 😮

I’ll call you at work later today or tommorow.

Cheers The Col.

Hi John,
Have fun! I love S.E Asia. When I was in Laos in 1999, I passed through a small village outside of Sekong somewhere that had an F4 in the rice paddies… I’m not sure whether it was worth salvaging… The area was also littered with puck mines. My father’s friend used to drop unexploded weapons in that area before returning to base. If I remember correctly he flew F105’s and F4’s. He has since passed on due to war related health problems…

Cheers,

Todd

Last few were taken at The War Remnants Museum, again in Saigon.

I was in Vietnam for a short visit last month. Here are a few pics from around Saigon (sorry Ho Chi Minh).

The first two are at the Cu Chi Tunnel complex, the guns are there for you to try at a dollar a round. The next three are at The Reunification Palace in Saigon, with the F5 having been subject to a little local restoration.

The next four at the Military Museum in Saigon. The F5 was the one which bombed the roof of the Palace. The guns are still armed apparently!

There are supposedly a large supply of Wright 3350-26WD engines in Vietnam, but my understanding is that all the cans were opened up, so they would have no value now except as engine cores. If any of the hermetically sealed cans were still intact there would be strong interest, but I had heard that the Vietnamese opened them all, exposing them to corrosion.

Well, keep your eyes open anyway, and have a safe journey.

The Bearcats would be very worthwhile persuing as they seem to be soaring (at least in asking price) in value so the financing of the recovery and restoration would make a lot of sense. Good luck John!

Didn’t one of the magazines available on the high street have pictures of Skyraiders still in revetments and many engine pods (many still sealed) a few years ago?

All the best for a safe trip Setter.

Looking forward to the report on your return.

I remember reading an article in Warbirds Worldwide regarding these aircraft, I guess the article must be the best part of 10 years old now but it did indicate that there was an awful lot of stuff out there. Best of luck with it, hope you are successful.
