I was told yesterday of a 31 Sqn Grumman Avenger that ditched in the bay just off Gisborne, NZ, after its engine failed. Apparently the ditching was perfect and the plane floated for ages before slowly settling to the bottom. I don’t believe the location was too far offshore because the crew paddled towards the light of a farmhouse.
Apparently the location is all detailed in the aircraft’s official file, but the chap who told me, the Secretary of the No. 30 Squadronand Servicing Unit Association, told me it was hushed up for some reason.
Anyone fancy going on a treasure hunt off Gisborne? I wonder what condition it’s in now. It’s a wonder it hasn’t washed ashore.
