Is the old Kaitak runway open for general aviation or not?

Great photos – they brought back loads of memories….

My old man was in the British Army – and was posted to Hong Kong in October 1957 – I was 10 years old at the time.

We left for the UK in May 1960.

We had a flat down near the old Kai Tak – and Constellations, DC-7’s and Britannias used to go over our flat on finals – to the old runway.

There was even a set of traffic lights across the runway to stop the traffic.

I used to play down at the Kai Tak Flying Club – I can remember helping to push an Auster out of their hangar.

I went aboard a visiting RAF Sunderland and watched as US Navy Marlins landed in the bay – where the new runway was being built.

There was a fenced-off road where dumper trucks used to travel 24/7 carrying rocks from the mountain to Kai Tak to make the bedrock of the new runway. I used to play down there – and sometimes had rides on the bulldozers – what a thrill for a 10-year old !!!

Our school used to use the pool at RAF Kai Tak for swimming lessons – and I can remember our coach driving past the line of DH Venoms at dispersal.

When the new runway was opened in 1959/60(?) – by a BOAC Comet piloted by John Cunningham – the planes then used to fly directly over our school on the curved approach.

I saw my first Boeing 707 – Pan Am I think – in 1960 as it flew over our married quarters in Fort Stanley.

Ahh!! Such memories……………..

Kai Tak

Aim for the chequer board, turn right and then wave to ‘granny’ in the high rise.

The most amazing place to land in something big and a bit disconcerting for nervous first time passengers.

There are some wonderful video clips of 747s yawing and hawing to get back on the centreline with a crosswind.

Oh how I miss the beaches of Southern Thailand! If I only had some holiday time left for this year… I guess I’ll just have to dream until January.
