Are the originals .25″ thick? I didn’t think they were…..16’s guage or 10’s guage was more the norm (0.064″ and 0.128″…or, a 1/16″ or an 1/8″ near enough) for such panels.

Yes they are… a whopping whole 1/4″ thick indeed 😮
