Saturday 28th September 1940 – the fallen
41 squadron, Hornchurch.
Spitfire X4409, P/O H.H. Chalder killed, shot down during combat over Charing, possibly that which exploded over East Stour Farm, Chilham, 10.30 hrs. Pilot bailed out seriously wounded and landed at Garlinge Green, admitted to Chartham Hospital, but died 10th November 1940.
Spitfire X4426, F/O J.G.Boyle killed, shot down in combat over Charing, crashed and burned out on Erriotts Farm, Dadmans, Lynstead, 10.37 hrs.
238 squadron, Middle Wallop.
Hurricane N2400, Sgt R Little missing, shot down into sea during combat with Bf109s over the Isle of Wight, 14.45 hrs.
Hurricane V6776, Sgt E Bann killed, severely damaged by Bf109s over Fareham, pilot bailed out over Brading Marshes, but parachute failed, 14.59 hrs.
Hurricane P3836, P/O D.S. Harrison killed, shot down in combat with Bf109s over the Solent, and crashed in the sea, 14.50 hrs. Pilot’s body washed ashore at Brighton 9th October 1940.
501 squadron, Kenley.
Hurricane P3417, P/O F.C. Harrold killed, shot down by Bf109s and crashed in Strawberry Plantations, College House, Ulcombe, wreck burned out, 10.10 hrs
603 squadron, Hornchurch.
Spitfire L1076, F/L H.K. MacDonald killed, bounced by Bf109s over Gillingham, and shot down onto Brompton Barracks, 10.20 hrs.
605 squadron, Croydon.
Hurricane V6699, F/O P.G. Crofts killed, shot down by Bf109s over Ticehurst and exploded in a paddock at Earls Down, Red Pale, Dallington, pilot bailed out but fell dead at South View Farm, Warbleton, 13.55 hrs.
607 squadron, Tangmere.
Hurricane P3108, F/L W.E. Gore missing, shot down in action with Bf109s east of Selsey, believed crashed in sea, 15.00 hrs.
Hurricane R4189, F/L M.M. Irving missing, crashed in the Channel east of Selsey, during combat with Bf109s, 15.00 hrs.
