Just goes to show what a bit of time and effort can do if you can’t afford the real McCoy! 🙂

The Titan T-51 looks really nice! I have info on it at home.
There was also the Spitfire 25, again made by Supermarine in Australia but unfortunately discontinued :(, that had a Jabiru of some kind installed.

They are very authentic looking.

I did manage to find this on the Me-109 replica. Looks nice !!
That’s the one I was talking about before. I think it suffered some damage a while ago.
The ones that dj51d was referring to really look like Bf109s – I think they are either F or G models. I can’t find a link for them, nor do I have any pictures, but they were awesome!

Theoritically the inverted V12 would give the Me-109 the same cowling lines as a DB-601 would…
Love to see pics of those if ever possible.

I can’t say why the Rangers are so common for these projects. There is another project I’ve heard about, but can’t find further details on at the moment. Two retiree’s in either North or South Dakota here in the states built full scale Bf-109 replicas from composite materials, these were powered by Ranger engines, though most likely the inverted V-12 rather than the 6-cyl used on the P-40 and P-51 replicas.

What’s the story with the Ranger engines?
I always thought they were quite an elderly engine, powering the Ryan PT-22 and such, and also a messy one with old tech exposed tappets.

Sorry I can’t find any better photos. The ranger looks good on his 2/3 Mustang too, http://members.shaw.ca/kfalconar/fa/mustang.htm . Ross Grady used to own ex-FAB Cavalier Mustang 67-22581 C-GMUS, which is now N151MC and has unfortunately been returned to stock P-51D configuration by the current owner.

That’s ‘cos you’re seeing it from behind 😉
But yeah, it is nice. Here’s a couple of much better looking ones….
Spit No.1 is the Chevy V-8-powered beauty that first flew in July.
Spit. No.2 is a Jag V-12-powered 80% scale replica from a company (now long-defunct) called “Thunder Wings” – they also offered a P-40 and FW190. This one is in the Norwegian Aviation Museum.

Presumably he chose a Ranger because it was available, and it’s a proven and reliable powerplant, without having to modify it to buggery like the V-12 Jag engine that Clive Du Cros had for his full-scale K5054 replica. Plus it’s air-cooled, which probably saves in complexity and weight.
Here’s another couple of Ranger-powered Spitfires.
By: turbo_NZ - 27th September 2004 at 11:47
The P-40 definitely looks the best.
Why a Ranger ?
Are there any better V-type engines for these size aircraft which would look more scale in the cowling area ?
I know the P-40 guy has it sorted though.

By: DazDaMan - 27th September 2004 at 11:43
Two-thirds scale. That inverted Ranger engine is nicely hidden in the P-40’s cowling, unlike this one in a Spitfire…
Ever see that full-scale flying replica Me109, again with a Ranger? That looks even worse….!!
By: turbo_NZ - 27th September 2004 at 11:41
wow !! looks great.
From the pics it looks full-size or near to.
