In 1998 or 1999, I had downloaded some files from a website that gave spit survivor histories – inturn taken from warbirds world wide directory i think. i ended up entering them in an Excel worksheet and forgot about it. Now I found the list again.
http://jaganpvs.tripod.com/Spits.htm
The list has 187 Spits listed – And I am sure it has its fair share of errors and mistakes (5spits in india? i know only three from those days). I am sure over these five years a fair number of Spitfires were bought back from the cold (russia) or escavated – that form potential rebuild projects.
What is the current number? I have seen figures of 250 being mentioned off the cuff, but whats the exact number?
PS: Hey maybe we can do this to Hurricanes too 😛

Jagan,
This was something that came up a while ago and after a quick look at my notes I see my “magic” number is currently 213 survivors.
There are projects and identities that don’t quite make it into the list just yet but I’ll bet over time the number continues going up 😀
