SB-17 Search and Rescue

Hi all,
Can anyone supply info as to the use of SB-17 search and rescue being used in the early 1950s ?
Mainly the use out of “Lages Azores Airport ” either by USAF,Navy,USCG, or buy the Portuguese Air Force.
I came across a couple of photos taken at Lages Azores Airport in 1952 and in the background is an SB-17.
Thanks,
Don

I believe the CAF’s “Sentimental Journey” was an SB-17 before her firefighting career.
Another good book(s) to look for is “B-17 in Detail and Scale” by Bert Kinsey…3 vols. There is as lot on the SB variant in tone of those..I believe Vol 3.
Also most decent B-17 books willhave something on the SB-17…they were used a lot in Korea.
Check out the USAF Museum website at:
http://www.wpafb.af.mil/museum/ and do a serch on the SB-17.
They have many of the mission histories of the 3rd Rescue group in Korea which have great operational details on the SB-17 use.
