Film Review: Sky Captain and the world of tomorrow

Alright, folks, the first of the winter aviation flicks is out and it’s not too bad…featuring Jude Law as Sky Captain, a hero who served with the Flying Tigers in China and STILL flying a testosterone-laden P-40E with slightly upward canted wings, this movie is a combination of Raiders of the Lost Ark meets Star Wars meets the Rocketeer meets every serial sci fi show you ever saw…and it’s FUN to watch! There is a running gag with a film camera and its owner (Gwyneth Paltrow) as a nosy reporter smitten with Sky Captain, and Angelina Jolie plays an old ‘friend’ of Sky’s from his days with the Tigers in China…she is now in command of the British forces in the far east (and wait till you see what THEY’RE flying…looks like something dreamed up by the folks at Saab!) The whole movie is just a lot of fun and even has a ‘Tora Tora’ moment in it, when the bad guys sweep in in their Klingon bird of prey looking machines (except the wings flap) and attack Sky Captain’s base, destroying all the P-40’s and a couple of B-24’s in the process…all in all a great, fun flick that folks were buzzing about as they left the theatre and seemed to REALLY enjoy…so you might wanna check it out…

Speaking of aviation movies…two of the trailers that played before the movie itself were for the new ‘Flight of the Phoenix’ and ‘The Aviator’ movies, which both looked good but if I had to choose one to see, it looked like ‘The Aviator’ was the better bet, based on the life of Howard Hughes and starring Leo DiCaprio…it looked like it was gonna be GOOD…scenes of the Hughes H-1 racer (sadly lost after Oshkosh last year), the Hughes F-11, Lockheed Connie and other planes really get your attention…I bet it’s worth while..

Yeah, I agree, I think Sky Captain was an original concept, not borrowed from the comics or anything but rather ‘influenced’ by other pics like Raiders and Star Wars and such…but very original in its own application…still, and as Whiskey Delta seems to agree with me, a very good ride for the money, lots of action, flying and humor…check it out.

I believe Sky Captain is an original concept. The Rocketeer was based on a 1981 comic.

I saw Sky Captain last night and give it a thumbs up.

Is Sky Captain based upon a 1940’s comic strip like Buck Rogers, or a book or anything? Or is it a completely new idea for film? Anyone know?

I loved the Rocketeer. I’d like to see it again someday. I think that was based on an old comic, wasn’t it?
